Shazam was originally called Captain Marvel and was a comic owned by Fawcett Comics, but it went out of print in 1953. 21 years later, DC bought the rights to the Character, but they couldn’t call him Captain Marvel because Marvel had already trademarked that name. So DC renamed him Shazam to avoid getting sued. Despite this he still calls himself Captain Marvel in the comics.

Shazam’s original name was Captain marvel, and he came first before Carol Danvers. So Shazam is the original Captain Marvel and then Captain Marvel(Carol Danvers) came in and that’s why they changed his name to Shazam so that it wouldn’t be 2 captain marvel’s

I'm still going for him to take the win because hes faster and arguably more durable than her, but CM is more powerful than you think. She managed to hold up a dead Celestial and match Thor in combat. She also has more she can do with her energy absorption and manipulation than him. Again, I still think he has this but it is FAR from a stomp.

Dwayne was surprisingly spot-on with that explanation. Captain Marvel/Shazam was indeed the first hero with the name Captain Marvel. He wasn't DC at first though. They sued the independent comic company that was producing CM, (because they felt he was too similar to Superman... [he wasn't/isn't...])and during that suit... just to simply things... they bought the rights to the comic... but they didn't trademark the name. So 30 years later, Marvel just decided to make their own character with the same name... and they DID trademark it. So the *original* Captain Marvel (now Shazam) had to have HIS comic marketed as Shazam. This went on for about another 45 years or so, with them BOTH using the name simultaneously, until an additional suit by Marvel (in like 2011 or so) caused them to be unable to use the trademarked name _at all._ So now he's Shazam, and she's *Captain Marvel*. It's stupid if you ask me though. They should really just let _the original_ have HIS real name. 'Shazam' was initially (and still is, in fact, if the trailer's to be believed) the name of the wizard that GAVE Captain Marvel (then, just noble pre-teen, Billy Batson) his powers. Now it's still a shitstorm of confusing mess, and what's *worse,* "Shazam" can't even say his own godamn name now without triggering the transformation that turns him back into a pre-teen. This is why I didn't go see "Captain Marvel" in theatres. (REALLY looking forward to Shazam tho! it looks great!)

Jazz! Sorry for the long explanation, but here's the story on Captain Marvel/Shazam! Shazam originally debuted in the 1930's as Captain Marvel. Shazam wasn't his codename, it was the word he used to activate his powers and it's been there since the start. But by the 1950's, DC thought that Captain Marvel was a Superman rip-off and he was outselling Superman, so DC sued Fawcett Comics (the creators of Captain Marvel) and made them stop making Captain Marvel comics. However, DC didn't grab the Captain Marvel trademark which was now available. So in the 1960's, Marvel made their own version of Captain Marvel and obtained the trademark. Years later in the 1970's, DC now owned Fawcett Comics and decided to bring back the original Captain Marvel because they needed some cool superheroes. But because Marvel now had the trademark, DC could only name the character Captain Marvel inside of a book, but the title of the book itself couldn't be Captain Marvel, nor could the cover call him Captain Marvel. So DC instead called him Shazam in titles and covers, while calling him Captain Marvel inside the books. However, in the 2010's, DC finally renamed him Shazam to avoid confusion with Captain Marvel. As for Marvel's part, if they want to keep the trademark, they always need to release a Captain Marvel book. Always. This is why even though the original Marvel's Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) died in the 1980's, he's since been succeeded by Louisiana police officer Monica Rambeau (Carol's "niece" in the movie), Mar-Vell's own children Genis-Vell (son) and Phyla-Vell (daughter), the kindhearted Skrull Khn'nr, fellow Kree Noh-Varr, and most recently and notably, his lover Carol Danvers.

Billy Batson or Shazam was named Captain Marvel during the Fawcett Comics days (it's creator from the 1940's), before DC bought Fawcett Comics. Shazam was still know as Captain Marvel (including Young Justice) until only a few years ago. Despite Marvel Comics also having a Captain Mar-vel and other iterations like Ms. Marvel. It will become even more confusing if Mary Marvel, Billy Batson's sister comes on the scene, bringing a name change to her.

Captain Marvel (Shazam) was first owned by, I believe it was a company call Fawcett( I don't remember the full name). However due to that character's similarities to Superman, DC sued and won gaining the right to Captain Marvel, but the character's name was free for anyone to use. Later on Marvel comic would make their own Captain Marvel which would lead to the current confusion between the two characters. After Flashpoint, DC rebooted into the new 52, where they officially changed the character's name to Shazam. I definitely missed a few details but that the gist of why they're both named captain Marvel.

To explain the confusion about Captain Marvel being named Shazam: Shazam was originally named Captain Marvel, but Marvel comics obviously didn't like that, so Marvel made "their own" Captain Marvel. It started a LOT of controversy in the 70s and by 1972 DCs Captain Marvel officially changed the character's named to SHAZAM! So technically there's only one character named Captain Marvel now, but as true DC fans, Shazam will always be known as THE TRUE Captain Marvel.

Shazam's name was changed when Marvel almost took DC to court over the name since Marvel trademarked Captain Marvel, so DC had no choice but to change it. ALSO, Shazam is not a DC original character. He was created by a smaller comic company that DC basically bullied to stop using, cause they thought he was too much like Superman. Then when that company went under, DC snatched up the rights to him.

well the 18 one was kinda one sided considering yes she can absorb 18 blast but at the same time 18 can absorb her own energy which wasnt fair cause capt. marvel cant capitalize on the fact she dishes double the power of the energy she absorb plus she dint even get to full binary form cause 18 stopped using blast ........ which in civil war 2 if the fight continued she would have killed the entire planet as logan states stark pushed her too far meaning stark used every arsenal he had to take down capt. marvel but it triggered her full binary form that killed the entire planet and turned the area into wasteland (logan dint die cause regen lol)
