This is SUCH a powerful movie!! I've always been a fan of Peter Strauss, but I think this role is the one I like least!! The fact that Dr. Sheppard was convicted on the basis of his "Trumpian" morals (or lack thereof) was a travesty, but the son is the one who actually seems to have endured the harshest sentence!! The arrogant, sex-crazed father was such a sh*t, but the abandoned/rejected child was as much a victim as his murdered mother!! It's inconceivable to me that relatives could be so callous to the child who lost EVERYTHING!! I'm amazed he turned out as well as he did!!

Do you really think so? He plays one kind of character, and seems to me to maintain one posture and facial expression in every scene. The most outstanding aspect is his Marlboro cowboy jawline and chest width, which seems perpetually 3/4 turned to the camera, looking intently at a diagonal at whoever else is in the scene. You really put him up there with the greats? Anthony Hopkins? Rod Steiger, Richard Crenna, Mark Ruffalo, David Jason, Al Pacino, Paul Newman, Brando, Hugh Grant, Rob Williams, Matt Damon, Brian Dennehy, Russell Crowe . . . ? In that category? I wouldn't recognise or remember him at all except that I just this week saw another movie where he was in exactly the same position within a slightly altered plot. Other than that he reminds me of a cigarette commercial series. He's handsome, in a very classic American way that leaves me blank, I'll grant you that, but tell me what makes him among the greatest actors of all time? I'm curious how you evaluate acting.

It's not the Justice system. It's actually a good system, one of the best in the world. It's the beings that control that system. It's greedy people, using it to fuel the hunger for power and wealth. As s judge once told me, "It's about the numbers", referring to arrest and Prosecution. Cops are encouraged to make arrest, mostly DUI, Drugs, whether the person is breaking the law or not. They fuel them with Attaboys and awards. Prosecutors are fueld by numbers, Attaboys and hopes for higher political power, and wealth. Judges are fueled by power and wealth, and higher power. The Politicians that make the laws, well, no need to even say that one.

My mother told me all about the Sam Shepherd case when I was a kid. She remembered more about it when the Harrison Ford movie came out: "The Fugitive"--the only thing that movie had in common with the real case was just the names of the family and the murder itself. My mom really scoffed at the movie, although I enjoyed it. NOW, I have seen this film, on the actual case--and realize what a tragedy of a case this really turned out to be for this family. The father was tried by the news media and convicted by the court of public opinion--and later his case is overturned because of how it was handled, and found "not guilty"--which is not the same as being found innocent, or being acquitted even. It still leaves room for doubt about a person's innocence. A person must be found INNOCENT, in order to walk away from something like that with clean hands. So the kids mother is dead, then the aunt or grandmother kills herself? The grandfather cannot take the stress and has a heart attack. This poor kid has lost half of his family, and then shipped off to military school? Good grief! It is a wonder Sam jr did not lose his mind! My grandmother believed Sam Sr. did the murder. She was shocked when DNA evidence proved him innocent. My mother felt vindicated in her beliefs from childhood believing in his innocence. I could not believe that this murder case had affected my own family--why? Because when my mom was a kid, they moved back to that community and lived where it happened, and lived in that circus of a news media. I guess the older generation fell for that garbage. The teens did not--while the younger children did whatever their parents did. Kind of strange, My mom was an independent thinker, and has always been the Perry Mason type! God rest her soul.

Meghan Tomlinson Yeah. Watched this story since the news and media sensationalized it in the sixties. There have been several movies and made for tv shows about it over the years which I have watched intently. Don’t know how he could have ever received a fair trial the way the media seized on it and garnered such a negative narrative. Always believed in his innocence, and cannot believe the duration of the threshold of this legacy hanging over his son.

at 54:00 nice that Dr. Sheppard got his license back, however he never got his skills back and he ended up killing his patients, and died of alcohol related problems. Not a good human being - not to his wives, not to his own son. Of course that does not mean he does not deserve justice.

He himself was to blame for destroying his own reputation. His wife and son were the ones to feel sorry for. In reality an unfaithful person destroys his/her partner, home and children in so many ways... Therefore that the cruel act of adultery so often leads to divorce, and/or even to physical murder. Anyway, it is clear why God hates divorce, and why it is likened in Scripture to covering one's garment with violence.

So, due to the vindictiveness of one man, the coroner, who hated Sheppard, the deliberate lying and cover-up of the police and the prosecutors and the corruption of the "justice" system of which they were all a part, so many innocent lives were destroyed. Can such a country survive?

@reality check The justice system in the U.S., from all accounts, is just as bad, if not worse, than is portrayed in this film. Today it has become completely politiicised, i.e. has departed from dispensing justice to an even greater extent. The same is true however in Canada where I live and judges are selected largely on the basis of their political loyalties and adherence to the questionable modern morality. So the societies in which we live are fundamentally broken and will not survive long. The corruption has spread to the roots of the tree and it must fall. While those who have brought this about revel in their victory of having done so, the forces of retribution are gathering force and will soon sweep away the unsound, rickety Rube Goldberg moral machinery.
