Man these year by year best of Death Metal reviews really drive home how much Chris Barnes vocals have deteriorated. Dude was once upon a time one of the Kings of Death Metal vocals. Turned all the way down into a laughingstock. It's sad really.

My favorite from 1994 is Gorement. They embraced the already more sombre swedish sound and made it actually full blown melancholic. It almost sounds like gothic doom metal but more serious and aggressive

Amorphis and Edge of Sanity are the 2 greatest imo. Stone cold classics 🤘

Tales from the thousand lakes is a HUGE milestone in melodeath, that happened to survive the test of time. I remember hearing it for the first time, and it was like discovering a new planet. It is very difficult to undestand the impact of this in retrospective, specially considering the thousands of bands that gradually refined the genre.

Loving these tier lists by year. Gives great context to compare what was coming out those years, instead of just within a band's discography. Little surprised Napalm Death 'Fear Emptiness Despair' got left off haha. I know that one really divides fans. Some others from 1994 that I think would definitely be worth checking out: Visceral Evisceration - Incessant Desire for Palatable Flesh (seriously think you should check this one out) Cianide - A Descent Into Hell Disharmonic Orchestra - Pleasuredome Oppressor - Solstice of Oppression Detest - Dorval Luciferion - Demonication (The Manifest)

I checked out Cenotaph’s debut and absolutely loved it. I’d put it in S-tier for the 1992 list. Still need to check out the rest of their albums as well as the rest of Brutality’s albums. As far as the albums on this list that I’ve heard, this would be my ranking: S - Bolt Thrower - …For Victory, Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow, Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes, Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding A - Cryptopsy - Blasphemy Made Flesh, Incantation - Mortal Throne of Nazarene, Asphyx - Self-titled, At the Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease, Gorement - The Ending Quest, In Flames - Lunar Strain, The Chasm - Procreation of the Inner Temple, Hypocrisy - The Fourth Dimension, Brutal Truth - Need to Control B - Septicflesh - Mystic Places of Dawn, Grave - Soulless, Obituary - World Demise, Sarcofago - Hate C - Convulse - Reflections, Mortification - Blood World, Pungent Stench - Club Mondo Bizarre-For Members Only
@dillon10582 ай бұрын
I'm not surprised seeing the death n roll albums by Convulse and Gorefest on that list. With that said, it was definitely a fantastic year for death metal. A few more death metal albums released in 1994 that I enjoyed that are worth checking out: Morta Skuld - As Humanity Fades Oppressor - Solstice of Oppression Gutted - Bleed For Us To Live Cianide - A Descent Into Hell Infected Virulence - Music Of Melkor Mangled Torsos - Drawings Of The Dead Betrayer - Calamity Exoto - Carnival of Souls Eternal Solstice - The Wish Is Father To The Thought

Depends. Some of the orchestral stuff is corny and sounds like a metal version of Hellraiser. My favs are Esoptron and Communion, but then I'm a fan from the old days and started listening to them in the mid 90's. Younger fans probably have a different perspective.

Yeah, Mortification went downhill hard after 93’s PMA. After that album, original drummer Jayson Sherlock left the group and I have read that he had a big influence on most elements of the music, in addition to his excellent drumming. The thing you're obviously missing is context. You have *no fucking clue* on how these sounded in their day. That makes you oblivious to the fact on how "for victory" was just another solid death metal album, and how gorefest's "Erase" sonority was basically unheard from an extreme band and was heavily influential in many modern bands, as it also happened with Heartwork. Both (for victory/erase) are in my top 20 albums. Gorefest shares with Carcass the proverbial death'n roll sound that shaped the european metal scene in the 90's, but death'n roll is a modern expression. At the time it was just extreme metal. Btw, Gorefest was one of the first metal bands to record with an orchestra. Search "goddess in black metrople orkest". Yes, it is one of the songs from Erase.
