My favorite death metal album is Scream Bloody Gore, I love everything played on that album, especially the drums. I recently looked up that "guy" and it was Reifert of Autopsy. I didn't put my time in every single one but I like the sound of almost all of them.

I will always hold Cannibal Corpse up as the prototype for all death metal. They were the first death metal band I ever heard, they were the first to be recognized on a "main stream" type of level. Most things you associate with death metal might not have originated with them(some did) but they PERFECTED them. Not to mention when it comes to riffs, they are without a doubt the "grooviest" death metal band of all time. If I could pick only one death metal band to listen to it would be them, and it wouldn't even be a choice, it'd be automatic and the rest wouldn't even be close.

I had to come a long way to finally admit to myself that Cannibal Corpse is truly thee DEFINITION OF DEATH METAL in it's purest form, even more than bands like Death, or Morbid Angel. They are the band that took traditional Death Metal further than anyone else while still staying within their original musical identity. Sure, CC has had albums where they were more experimental than others, but it has always been Death Metal 100%, no exceptions. If some people don't like that, they can go listen to other bands who prefer to branch out of Death Metal. That's not Cannibal Corpse. I have always loved the first 4 CC albums since I was a little kid, but it wasn't until I grew into adulthood that I started to love the George Fisher era even more than the first 4 albums. Every CC album is top shelf Death Metal in my opinion, but the Barnes era is a lot easier to digest because it's more straight forward musically speaking. Once my ear finally fully caught on to what I was hearing musically in the Fisher era CC albums, I started to realize that it's so dynamic, and it is vastly more musically dense than most other traditional Death Metal out there. What I love most about Cannibal Corpse is that they can be pretty technical, and dynamic, but they don't overdo it. They only use technique to serve their music, not to win guitar player awards or anything like that. The way they write their songs just blows my mind. CC's transitions, tempo changes, riffs, dark tremolo picked melodies, harmonized guitar parts, drum patterns, and vocal patterns are unmatched, and no song sounds the same. My favorite thing about Cannibal Corpse is when they go from a blast beat into a slow half time groove like in Mummified in Barbwire where Paul uses his ride cymbal, and the snare drum has more reverb on it than normal. They don't really do breakdowns, but they do have those awesome slow tempo moments that make the hair on my neck stand up. It's like a symphony of heavy, dark, angry horror.

I know Cannibal Corpse is very popular and highly regarded, but I just don't like the music. I'd move Suffocation up to the A tier. Also, entombed's death metal catalog is a little bit skimpy. Great band that did some great death metal, but they moved past the genre fairly quickly. I'd probably move Deicide or Gorguts up ahead of them. Can I say how thrilled I am that Autopsy is getting some love from the younger generation? I saw them in 2011 in Oakland, CA. Absolutely amazing! I'd also probably put Morbid Angel above Bolt Thrower in the S tier. To me, Death and Morbid Angel are the two best and most important death metal bands.

It's hard to pick one favorite death metal band, but I go with "kataklysm", because they were the reason why I got into this sub genre, after I watched their performance at the bang your head festival in Germany! God Dethroned, Toxocara and Revel in Flesh are also awesome death metal bands

Never been a huge Nile fan. Like I like the content of their lyrics but idk I feel like it doesn’t match. I saw them live back in 2006 with Hypocrisy, Decapitated, and Soilent Green. Nile was the headline band. They were as dull as piss water. They could have placed a card board stand of them and played their albums and it would have been better. After Decapitated and Hypocrisy performed, like probably 50% of the people left. We left after their 4th song. Hopefully they got better but when we saw them, they were terrible. Oooo a Dying Fetus ranking would be awesome. While I do have a love hate relationship with them, I can’t deny I’m they are badass and the riffs... one of the most monster riffs in metal period.

Possessed released their best album in 2019 Gorguts takes a bit of influence from Ulcerate these days "D list" Necrophagist kicked off a wave of more technical bands. Possessed birthed the genre and mentored Chuck Schuldiner Immolation,Vader, Origin, Cadaver, Grave,Deeds of Flesh, Defeated Sanity , Cattle D etc too many bands to tier

Larbi Houmam well that’s a good factoid for me to know! All this time I was categorizing Ulcerated as Gorguts worship, (not that I thought of that as bad, I like ulcerate) it’s good to know they deserve more credit for their innovations. Are you familiar with the band Lightdweller? If you like Ulcerate and Gorguts dissonant stuff you’ll like lightdweller. It’s dissonant and jazzy but also very unique, managing to encapsulate a unique atmosphere and style while sticking closer to blackened death roots. I plan on buying one of his albums next pay day that’s for sure. I recommend them highly and hope you find them favorable if you listen to um. Hails to the underground 🤘🏻

Cryptopsy could be one of the greatest death metal bands if they continued making albums with the non so vile quality , but they just went very messy IMO , i dont get any feeling with their albums, the lack of lord worm was noticeable.. Also deicide had a very solid career with only 3 meh albums, i think A rank could be better

Man hearing you say Incantation lacks riffs just hurts my soul :( They're one of my favorite bands on that list and are crazy consistent in my opinion. I'd even say Diabolical Conquest is my favorite death metal album. Gorguts I agree with. The first two albums are VERY good OSDM. Obscura is very influential to so much dissonant black and death metal, but I never really enjoyed it. The songwriting just doesn't grab me like some of the bands that album went onto influence, such as Ulcerate and Deathspell Omega. The next couple albums are meh as well. Although I will say you should give Colored Sands a few more listens, because that one really isn't that far apart from what Ulcerate are doing now and is very good. Just wait for for that one to click! I also do agree that Possessed is somewhat black/thrash, but I'd recommend going back to Seven Churches and especially listening to songs like The Exorcist. That kind of dissonant tremolo riffing is probably the closest thing to Morbid Angel until.... well.... Morbid Angel (I believe Trey has also cited Possessed as a major influence as well).

Philip Norman You should check out that band that is my avatar, Infester: album; To the Depths in Degredation. One of the filthiest, most vile, unholy sound to ever be captured on a recording. Also don’t neglect such classics as Baphomet/Banished, Morta Skuld, Rottrevore, Morpheus Descends, Cianide. As well as heavy hitting new comers like, Cerebral Rot, Some Dead Bodies, Casket Slime, Temple of Void, Ascended Dead, Ripped to Shreds, Siege Column, Wharflurch, everyone on the maggot stomp label. Okay that was a lot to unload on you but if I’m naming bands I love I could go on. Some real gems in my list if you ask me and I hope you find something you love in it if you check any of those bands out. Hope you enjoy your journey into metal and welcome 🤘🏻
