This is a death metal cover I wrote and performed of the song Erlkonig originally by Franz Schubert.

Erlkonig: "Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt; Und bist du nicht willig, so brauch' ich Gewalt." Chris Hanson: "Why don't you take a seat right over there?"

As soon as I heard the opening bars of the original version of this song, I immediately thought, "there's no better classical song to do a metal cover of!" I'm glad someone else had the same idea!

Classical and metal are the only forms of music I know of that both reach for the sublime aesthetic as a matter of course.

Metal and classical are just two sides of the same coin. They are the only two musical genres that routinely strive for the sublime aesthetic.

I have always suspected that Beethoven would have loved metal as well.

I very much hope that's supposed to be German and not Dutch. Otherwise that would be very inappropriate

@helenamcginty49203 жыл бұрын
@@blazfuturama no. They played someone singing the original but she thanked someone for introducing her to the heavy metal versions. The original as played this am was good as well. Esp the piano which is heavy.

Overall it was good for what it is, but as far as a cover goes it lost a few elements. Some constructive criticism. Schubert had written the piece with the repeated figures the length of the score, written in triplets to symbolize the horse galloping through the forest. I think you could have still used the variations on the theme that you did while still keeping the repeated triplets. The constant and urgent galloping is kind of at the core of this piece and without it the overall atmosphere is kind of lost. Next, since there are no vocals, you really need for the guitar to play the different roles of the narrator, father, son, erlkonig. When this piece is sung the vocalist assumes those roles to match the character, as does the music change in such a way to reflect. For example, the father is worried for his son, so when his part is performed there is a sense of urgency behind it. The son, claims to see the erlkonig and has a growing fear that gradually increases through his death. And the erlkonig, whenever he appears the music tonally shifts to major, and he sings very sweetly trying to entice the boy to come with him up to the end where he takes him by force. What would really benefit you here in terms of a cover would be to write the guitar lines to match these different tones for character. I really like the fact that somebody made an attempt at a metal cover for this masterpiece, so please don't take anything I said as an insult. Just some insight as to what you could do to make this cover truly epic. Keep up the good work.
