I think a demo many people don’t bring into the conversation is Blasphemy-Blood Upon the Altar. They aren’t necessarily perceived as death metal today, however in ‘89 there were really only umbrella terms to describe different styles. See the back cover of Onslaught-Power From Hell as a clear example of this. The trend I notice in the aforementioned records in the video is that Extreme Thrash like Seven Churches and Scream Bloody Gore was indeed faster and heavier than most records of the time, but generally do not have the qualities of the more refined elements that came later in the genre. In my opinion, SBG and SC are thrash. I think the earliest example of what is considered death metal today would be Season of The Dead-Necrophagia, but I also think that the first release to have the lowest growls, the most bombastic drum production, and most buzzsaw toned tremolo picking riffs was indeed Blood Upon the Altar. It’s unknown what month BUA was released but Altars was released in September (according to metal archives). So odds are, BUA predates it. I could make an argument for Hellhammer as well, but I think I’m finished with my autistic ramblings.

Thrash was not just inspired by British Heavy Metal, it was also heavily inspired by the DC Hardcore scene of the late 70s early 80’s like Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, Early Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Descendents. Early Metallica, Anthrax and the crossover thrash scene have a lot of hardcore influence in their music. The thrash drum beat aka the skank beat was a punk drum beat before it was used in thrash.
@theheaviestshow2 жыл бұрын
Very true!!!! Thanks for pointing that out 🤘

nwobhm were influenced by punk too! Heavy metal have a mix of rock styles. Some prog rock, punk etc, and than some bands put a little more influence of this, others bands of that...and at the end of the day its all music only, and this is what real metters.
@shanegrimsley31203 ай бұрын

Two Thrash Metal albums that came to my mind that I would include for the evolution of Death Metal would be Sacrifice - Torment In Fire (1986) Morbid Saint - Spectrum Of Death (1989) Check them out if haven't already Great video by the way, super entertaining. I also agree that Slayer - Raign In Blood (1986) is a HUGE! influence on Death Metal 100%.🤘

Great review of Death Metal history. It was fun. One thing though, please include the Swedish scene :). A trail of great bands came from Sweden with their own sound and approach: Entombed, Dismember, Grave and Unleashed with their classic buzz-saw guitar tone and, of course, At the Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquility "spawners" of melo-death scene. Also, Carcass's "Heartwork" was influential for both technical and melodic death metal scenes.

Sepultura's Bestial Devastation from 1985 and Morbid Vision from 1986 are basically pure death metal records, and clearly influenced death metal as we can see from Chuck using a Bestial Devastation t-shirt. Sarcofago was pretty influential as well, moreso for the vast use of blast beats even before Morbid Angel, in their debut album INRI.
@theheaviestshow7 ай бұрын
Chuck also wore Metallica shirts. That doesn't mean Metallica was death metal, just that they had an impact on him.
