I have 4 chinas on my kit, from left to right they are: 1: Sabian SR2 18" China (The newest of the bunch, about 4 months in my posession, im thinking its Post AAX) I got it "used" but it was literally brand new from the seller. Still had the price tag adhesive stuck to the inside of the bell and still does haha. He sold it to me with not a scratch on it. (Which is funny to me because the SR2 lines look aesthetic is very unique. They took heavy spinning heavy duty wirebrushes and spun the cymbals around on a lathe hitting it with the wire brush during the spin, putting on a unique pattern of scratches, then polishing it so it's smooth and doesn't slice you're hand lol, I did it my own way to some of my own cymbals and got a similar less prominent refinish, and really like it). 2: Sabian SR2 16" China (Post HHX) 3: Sabian SR2 18" China (Post HHX) THIS cymbal is the one I beleive you are referring to. Its my favourite of the bunch, got it about 4 years ago with the 16" from a local music store before Long and McQuade bought them out in my city. Its finally just starting to get a small warp in the side after 4 years of heavy use, isn't affecting the sound whatsoever. 4: Sabian AA 20" China. As bare bones as it gets haha. Its got the perfect deep sound to be my heavy off China. Its got some huge warps in it as I got it used and traded a super unique Sabian B8 Pro 18" China for it. I loved that China but I like this one a lot more, I don't care about the warps. Isn't affecting the sound negatively and there are no cracks or breaks. Its a beautiful cymbal. My friend really helped me out with that trade. In case you aren't aware of the short lived and still somewhat surviving cymbal line by Sabian, ill give you some info. Sabian started a "Professionally Used" discount "new" cymbal line option. They called it the SR2 Line. I'm actually unsure of what SR2 means, but I'm thinking the 2 has to do with it being moderately used. Sabian would send out prototypes, and cymbal care packages for professional sponsored musicians, touring musicians, studio musicians and so forth, for use in the studio. Whatever cymbal didn't work for them or just wasn't their taste was sent back to Sabian, and then refined, refinished and resold at half the price, as long as they weren't damaged and still in basically new condition, giving these cymbals another chance to be loved by drummers less financially fortunate, and giving Sabian a chance to make some money on cymbals they handed out through endorsements (not that they need it but still, smart and not crooked in my opinion). The two 18" chinas are completely different. All three of my SR2 chinas are covered in hammer marks. The far left SR2 18" on the left is the most flat and shallow, with a tiny bell and not so prominent hammer marks, evenly spaced out thats why i think its post AAX. Giving it a jarring gongy washy bowly dishy sound. The left SR 16" is deep, with a good sized average crash sized bell, covered in deep hammer marks unevenly spaced out (obviously hand hammered) but still a generalized and accurate pattern, giving it a shocking cracky snappy sound. Its like an electric whip I love it hahaha. The SR2 18" on the right is about as deep as the 16" with a slightly larger and deeper bell. Its basically an 18" match for the 16", but with incredibly deep hammer marks. The AA 20" on the far right is deep, but smooth as can be with deep lathe marks. Its just washy as all hell. If you look back in my videos you'll find for a while I was using mainly on my left side, a Wuhan 18" Chinese. That thing, sounded TERRIFYING. sadly I had to let it go to gelp get the far left SR2 18" because it didn't look good with my other sabians, nor did it compliment them in any way in my humble opinion. It also had a warp in the bell where the thing is meant to rest flat, so if it spun during playing at all it would move to an awful angle and I just got tired of it. There was also a crack in the bell, and I also got tired of that haha. Though I did love that cymbal. The sad thing is, unless you find out what exact cymbal these SR2's came from originally, you'll never find this sound again until you run into it by accident. When they first launched the line, there was one thing that determined the name of the cymbalwether it be a ride china splash hi hat crash you name it. It was based on the gram weight and diameter of the cymbal. They had, SR2 Thin, SR2 Medium, and SR2 Heavy. Rides abd bigger chinas would typically be called Heavy, crashed and hi hats altered called Medium, and Splashes were typically called Thin. They started realizing that was too simple and generalized (which is what they went for with the line, but I'm glad they fixed it), and started more accurately naming the cymbals by type. Luckily as picky as we are as drummers, chinas can be pretty universal. The more you have the harder it gets to put a nice set together that compliments each other well. But I feel like I'm really happy with these. As much as its a downside, I still find it awesome that no one else has these exact China sounds hahaha. Same with my small bells near my left hi hat. I cut them myself, no one else has em hahahahah. Hope this helps my dude!
