i'd say L holds the gun. i mean in the series or manga L said he also put his life in a contest. thats why it means while he can catch kira it means he can still lose his life before he ends kira. just like a double edged sword.

I believe L is holding the knife and Kira is holding the gun. With that being said, I interpret this as at a distance Kira clearly has the advantage. It is only when L can get close can he at least try to break even.

I view it as L being so smart that he made Kira endanger his own life to kill him, so kira is actually holding the knife while L is holding the gun, because L knew that robbing Kira of a slow death would drive him mad... And it really did.

I know I'm REALLY late to the party, but here are my thoughts on this image: Light is holding a gun to L's head and L is holding a knife to light's neck, right? In the end, L died a quick death and Light died a slow one. While L's death was sealed with the death note (the gun), Light was left fatally wounded by the knife (L's successors). Light's death was inevitable because of the wound L left behind before passing. L didn't win the battle, but he did win the war.

I believe that Light is holding the gun to himself, as his arm cannot bend in the way to point at L because L is behind him. I think he is holding it in that position as if to say "If you're going to try, I'll do it first".

The way I look at this image, it just seems like L is holding the knife and the gun. The gun and knife from how I see portrays both are gonna die. The knife is the slower death hence Light eventually succumbing at the end and L dying faster. Think about it, it would average take longer for a person to die from a fatal stab wound than a gunshot to the head. However, the lingering stab wound would be more painful. Then again I don't know who drew this to really understand the drawing of the thumbnail.

You guys got it all wrong. He’s holding both the gun and the knife. Using 2 limbs at once is very tricky and at times a double edged sword. It means one small mistake in the pursuit of Kira could mean his death, pulling the trigger being his mistake.
