Strongly agree. In the beginning, all Light wanted to do was make the world a better place by wiping criminals and scums of the Earth, but as the series progresses we can see how Light is falling more and more towards his evil side, which is Kira, and as he gets more and more power, he ends up being corrupted and becoming what he once sworn to battle. He was my favorite in the beginning, but now? Light the human died, and The God Of the New World, Kira, rose from the ashes that were once known as Yagami Light. Truly tragic

Disagree. I think even the reason why Light couldn't help but be interested in "making the world a better place" was that he somehow knew it'd give him an opportunity to show off his power and make him feel superior. It was also flattering to think that he was doing it all for others' sake. I think he wasn't truly interested in wiping the criminals and scums. He didn't want to truly help others. He always seemed a little distant, aloof and unempathetic although he may have had some attachments to some people before being taken over by this greed completely. People often mistake his curiosity for his empathy. Even in the beginning when he killed a couple punks to save that girl getting harassed, he didn't seem to be in a hurry. Someone who felt empathy would be either angry or upset there, and obviously rush things a little. Because that's how empathy works. It evokes similar sensations in our brains and influence our judgement. However, he kinda took his time, and experimented with the situation to test the limits of Death Note because he was calm and logical. This isn't something normal people can pull off so easily. Sure he hesitated at times, but that wasn't because he was a good person. It was because the situation could prove very risky for him. Light is the kind of person who's going to help you when you're in need not because he feels bad for you, but because he knows he'll leave a good mark on you by doing this. He's good at planning for the future. It seems to me that Light always desired power, subconsciously. Only those who desire power can genuinely be corrupt by it, after all. Light was egoistical. He had a tendency to believe that he was special. He thought that only he himself would be the match for what others couldn't accomplish. Light and Kira aren't so different from each other. Light is just the early phase of Kira who's all about greed. They're two sides of the same coin. But light always had that potential to turn into Kira. Because Light wasn't innocent in the first place. His actions might have seemed decent to some at first, but his thoughts weren't pure at the end of the day. The reason why Light couldn't become Kira earlier was that he lacked the power to do so. And perhaps even he was unaware that he wanted to be Kira since he is not the type to waste time dreaming of irrational fantasies. Moreover, he had stuff to do. Suddenly obtaining a godly power naturally caused him to shift priorities. And it seemed like he became someone else while in fact he just got a chance to reveal his true colors and suppressed thoughts. If you ask me, he was a narcissistic sociopath who happened to be a genius at making calculations, disguised as a successful and kind student. He knew how to meet the expectations of his friends and family as a decent child.

I don't agree with this because since the first episode, when Light first met with Ryuk, he already wanted to be a god, the god of the new world. He wasn't inherently good in his intentions of making the world a better place since the beginning but he definitly was consumed by his greed and narcisism during the anime.

@@Gmtz01 yeah I think you are a somewhat correct but I think that Light was taking wiping off criminals as a main quest and becoming God as a side quest because we can see at the beginning that he hesitated a little to kill off innocents in the first part of the show but soon his main quest somehow turned to becoming God because he didn't hesitated to kill off innocent ones. So I usually take wiping off people as a "Light" part and becoming God one as "Kira" part.

In his eyes ( his perspective of reality ) he thought that he was right ( a moral judgement ) but in real he wasn't, like neer mentions in the end that you are nothing but a serial killer who desires to be on top. Us humans, have the same desire where we choose to surf between right and wrong and choosing what is good for others but the burden of responsibility is huge. Light often says that he is justice but under the his desire of power, his justice became an evil desire. Like Neer says, that people aren't commiting crimes because they don't want to but because they fear Kira. Their hearts aren't changed but their mind is fearful towards consequences.

light was my favorite character in death note, the reason death note is my fav anime is because it is complex and leaves on the viewer to pick the sides, it does not state anyone being "good" or "bad" just like reality. light wasn't right because killing anyone no matter what they did isn't right, but the fact that he tried to help the society and did help the society all be him self and a magical book is amazing. He was an amazing person, his way of changing the world was wrong but he did it for the society, not for his own use but the society. i honesty respect him, and will always.
