Death of a Septic System

I didn't want to believe it. My Septic system was slowly failing until it just stopped. Disbelief, denial, finally resignation set in. Then renewal occurred. A new birth, twin seepage pits were born in in my front yard for all the neighbors to see.

Here in the north east I had a 1000 gal septic tank the down to a junction box out to five 50 feet leach lines. Boy was the grass always greener there

Same here. Grew up in upstate New York. Always had leach lines.

Very interesting and quite a difference from up here in New england. It looks like you just dig some sort of a big dry well that the septic tank overflow goes into. Here in New England we have long pipes Leach fields that are a lot different. I suppose perhaps the land up here doesn't drain as well and we just need much more surface area to percolate through and down into

Yes, I am from Upstate NY and found this practice strange. We have a lot of clay here with sand layers below. No rocks either. They only do this near the coast.

I've always been told to pump the septic every 5 years. Would that have mitigated the problem? Or was it just an age issue. 63 years is an amazing run!

It was the age. I had been pumping it every 3-4 years but there was very little sediment so went longer. Depends on how must stuff is send into tank.

Well done! Is there no city sewage pipes where you live and do your neighbours have the same issues? Good that you've got the RV motorhome! ☺

City sewer lines are about 1/4 mile away. Very expensive to have them dig up the road for me. Yes other neighbors have similar problems. Most houses buikt around same time.
