@benvolio mozart What misdeeds is she guilty of? Or do we still believe propaganda that is over 200 years old. The only thing she was guilt of was being born Austrian in the eyes of the French back then. The country was well on the road to ruin when she stepped foot in it thanks to the disastrous reign of Louis XV. Ironic that she is now a celebrated French icon though.

This scene reigns in film analysis heaven - a remarkable film from beginning to end!! The metaphor that the blade runs along the foreground, eventually cutting everything out of view, more powerful and overwhelming than Marie, her imagination, and those around her. Marie’s vision of her younger self full of pride, reality in the background and she tries not to face it, and the blade which puts and end to all - as her life becomes literally overtaken and overshadowed by the guillotine - cutting off her head in camera terms rather than showing exact details! Even the mere fact we never see the blade fall and the camera doesn’t return to that shot/setting means that perspective has ended or no longer exists. There is no greater art than lies in this film!! A true blessing to cinema, long may we enjoy it!!

Her son died in prison in 1795, while her eldest daughter married her cousin and became Queen of Frances for only 20 minutes. Both were exiled while Napoleon family ruled France until the monarchy abolished in 1870s. She died of Pneumonia on October 19 1851 at the age of 72. She and her husband did not have any children, so Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette descendants line died with her

My favorite movie (1938) about the ill fated Marie Antoinette, which is far and away better than the 2006 movie. Very sad ending for a young girl of 14, made to marry a 15year old that had no interest whatsoever in being the king of France. They were both ill equipped to rule a country that was already in such turmoil.

Marie Antoinette was seventeen days short of her thirty-eighth birthday when she was executed; but everyone who saw her said she looked at least seventy. She was also blind in one eye from the long time she had spent in dark cells. She had suffered horribly during the four years of the Revolution (in the five days of the royal family's failed escape attempt known as the 'flight to Varennes", her auburn hair turned snow-white).

This final scene is so harrowing. A masterpiece. With one error which , if included would have lifted it even further. Marie Antoinette had her hair dressed for the occasion but the guards roughly lopped it off and dumped a mob cap on her head. She had on her last pair of court high heeled shoes and as she ascended the stairs to the scaffold ..alone.. the remnants of her gracious lilting walk could be seen. She accidentally trod on the executioners foot and apologized to him. "Forgive me, I did not mean to do it" Louis went to his death in a carriage and met with silence. She was dumped on a farm cart with her hands tied behind her. Subjected to every form of foul abuse the animal mob could think of.

@Solitaire many reasons... For example, Matie Antoinette was only 14 when she went to France. She was really short and flat chested, she didn't look older than 12. Everyone thought she looked like a child. Yet, in the movie, she's portrayed as a full grown adult. Another example is that in the film Louis XV tries to send MA back to Austria and then he dies when she's about to leave France. So they make it look like, had the King died some days later, MA would never have become Queen. This never happened in reality. Also, Louis XVI was not as horrible as he is portrayed in the movie. He was shy and awkward but not like that. Another example of inaccuracy is the scene where the royal family flees: in reality, Marie Thérèse, princess of Lamballe, was not in the carriage. Madame Elizabeth (the King's sister) was. Madame Elizabeth had a very important place in the queen's life, she's the person Marie Antoiennte sent her last letter to, yet she doesn't appear once in the whole movie. Plus, the princess of Lamballe didn't die immediately after the flight failed, she died during the September Massacres, more than a year later. Also, MA wasn't separated from her son on the same day that Louis XVI was executed, it happened months later, in July 1793, and Madame Elizabeth was with her during that horrible moment. There are many other examples, it is all wrong... But I still loved it!

Although she was not the only French aristocrat to over-spend government money (by the millions of dollars, or Francs), she was still a huge part of the problem. She never wanted to come in contact with the common people, to see how their lives were, and to realize that many common French people were very, very poor and even STARVING TO DEATH!! She was not the victim you think she was. The French monarchy abused their power and needed to come to an end.

They still didn't deserve to be guillotined by the so called revolutionary leaders who themselves became so power hungry that they made up many lies about her. In the end they got the same punishment they had so quickly dished out to not only the monarchy and aristocrats but thousands of innocent regular citizens who said anything against them, even in private. Nothing improved for decades under Napoleon who made himself emperor of France and spent years trying to conquer the world, using France's blood and treasure to do it.

@@lindasturm699 While most of your comment is true, there is a part of me that feels that Marie Antoinette got the fate that she deserved. While many of the accusations against her were not true, there is one charge of which she truly was guilty of, and that was the charge of treason. Not the charge against her when it came to her son, I mean actual treason in giving French military tactics in the hopes that her family in Austria, particularly her oldest brother Joseph, would help her in escaping Revolutionary France. Granted this was prior to France declaring war on Austria. But it doesn't make it any less treason now does it?

@Cruella De Vil Unfortunately, she was. Although most charges were doctored, Marie was guilty of treason. She leaked French military plans to foreign powers (including her native Austria), which is treason in almost any country. Her excessive spending and flight to Varennes was her downfall.
