While this movie is a dark comedy a lot of its plot point actually happened. The orchestra and pianist being one, though her real letter was better worded it was still enough to have gotten her killed had he not had the stroke. They even waited till the maid came in with his dinner to see if he was safe cause Stalin literally killed a guard cause he came into his office cause the guard thought something happened.

The letter was sent and the piano concert happened in the early 40's though which is a difference. Stalin had years to kill her and chose not to because she was very talented and his favourite pianist. I learnt this from a video by HistoryBuff on KZbin but all their videos are well researched and go over the truth first and then inaccuracies and what actually happened.

Supposedly, Stalin had a stroke while re-reading a letter from Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia. Tito wrote to Stalin, saying that his men had caught one of Stalin's hit-men trying to kill the Yugoslav leader. Tito then threatened to send of his own men to visit Stalin in Moscow if the assassination attempts didn't stop immediately.

@@Notna-e5s Well, the letter from Tito to Stalin was very much real which Stalin held onto for the rest of his life and never sent another, since Yugoslavia and Tito never bent the knee to Stalin. Which read as follows: “Stop sending people to kill me. We’ve already captured five of them, one of them with a bomb and another with a rifle… If you don’t stop sending killers, I’ll send one to Moscow, and I won’t have to send another.” But Stalin was not reading that letter when he had the stroke that killed him.

The Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact states spent huge amounts on rebuilding what had been destroyed by the Germans and restoring historical buildings and decor and stuff. So yeah, they had enormous respect for history, because invaders had tried to destroy it. Not what you might expect from Communists, who are painted as vandals and philistines too focussed on the future to care about heritage. When Stalin had his emotional breakdown immediately after the Nazi invasion started, the government was dislocated and his close associates basically begged him to get over it and return to work. It shows not only that he'd surrounded himself with yes men who knew they weren't up to stealing his job, but also that they were very much in lock step on policy and ideology. Likewise when he died the succession struggle only took a few months, whereas when Lenin died, there were a few years of shaking out alternative ideas and highly talented people who could compete for power before Stalin could take over. Which means, unfortunately, that Stalin was the best man for the job in 1926, as well as the the most motivated and ruthless to take on the job. Which isn't to pretend he was good man or he didn't largely ruin Soviet socialism in terms of real socialist idealism, but if a better man could have taken over after Lenin, they would have. Beria was a real monster. A habitual rapist and possibly pedophile, as well, I forget. He positioned himself as the liberal after Stalin died, calling for the restoration of civil rights and for the Warsaw Pact states to stop building 100% nationalisation planned economies, with all the privations involved in setting that up, and instead to go back to a mixed economy - sort of the Chinese route but several decades earlier. No-one else in party leadership was fooled by him though, because they knew if he took power they would all be killed.

From my own experience, as a person coming from Czech Republic, I disagree. Many of our historical buildings were nationalized and then left alone to rot...Other ones were completely replaced. They kept only the historical buildings that were favourable with communist ideology like Hussites. In addition to that, there were many case even years after end of the WW2, where drunnk soviet soldiers destroyed property and many times even killed people in process...Instead of being put on trial, they were reasigned back to the USSR.

Reality of it, Zhukov hated Beria probably more than EVERYONE involved in the power struggle, right after WW2 ended, Beria attacked him politically and forced him to give up almost all the gold and goods he personally got from the soviet army looting everything on the way to Berlin. the only things that were exaggerated, was how fast this all happened, some key events left out for a faster film, but almost everything, From Stalins Son being a total fuckup, his daughter being a political piece everyone wanted on their side, to even the "swap with me" ceremony, the biggest change was them having Malenkov even after getting his wife back, denounced her as a traitor, that was bullshit, she was the only thing he wanted in life.
