HMAS Australia isn't a light cruiser John Crace is Australian born, UK raised Rear Admiral (no Captain) 2nd attack on TF 44 was by Nells. No "Sallys" in south Pacific if ever. They are an Army bomber. 24th Air Flotilla is an IJN unit under 11th Air Fleet, all IJN.

Good job. I've played "War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition" by Matrix Games extensively for many years and I'm familiar with this action. If you're not not familiar with this game, look it up. You might find it interesting. It's a serious strategy war game, not a video game or shooter.

I wonder how worthwhile converting cargo ships into decoy light carriers would have been, for both sides. I mean, so much of carrier warfare depends on locating enemy carriers. Tactically so you can launch strikes before they can, and strategically so you can know what parts of the massive theatre are vulnerable. Imagine if dummy sightings had persuaded the US to commit Midway carriers to the South Pacific, or if the attacks on the Akagi, Hiryu, Kaga, and Soryu had instead hit decoys. Even if code-breaking betrayed the decoys' location, you could still confuse attacking pilots harried by CAP and AA into choosing the wrong target. No idea how practical this would have been, it's just something I like to chew on.
@recoil535 күн бұрын
It would have eaten up ship yards, construction materials, and crew. Then you have the supplies used - which are scarce in the beginning the war - and the escort ships. Japan couldn't keep up with construction as it was and never had enough shipping. By the beginning of 1944 the US had built a larger carrier force than they started with and were rolling out more. From that point the Japanese only sunk a light fleet carrier IIRC. But remember the US was fighting a two front war while supplying the British, Russians, the Free French, and various assorted groups. The US could build, but again an empty hull is a diversion of resources. OTOH you can convert oilers and cargo ships into escort carriers. The first ones were actually that and the first designed classes were based on cargo ship hulls. These are genuinely useful ships. So it's a net negative.

The IJN did have a shadow carrier fleet program but that produced a mixed bag. They had a bunch of sea plane tenders and fast passenger liners alloted for carrier conversion. Problem was, these type of carriers weren't useful for fast fleet operations. Post-Midway, the IJN reorganized their carrier divisions to 2 fleet + 1 light carrier. The light carrier ended up as bait while the fleet carriers would hang back to deliver counter strikes. Like the Ryujo at the Battle of Eastern Solomons. Speaking of the Ryujo, the naval powers at that time couldn't build small carriers as it will count against their allowable carrier tonnage based on the Washington/London Naval treaties. Japan tried to cheat with the Ryujo but the loophole was closed.
@recoil533 күн бұрын
@@marvinm8343 Those conversions were meant to be serviceable auxiliaries, not dummy carriers.
@marvinm83433 күн бұрын
@@recoil53 As the poster before me posted, having dummy carriers is a stupid concept. Doesn't fit the IJN naval doctrine given that they have limited industrial capacity and were severely restricted by the London-Washington Naval treaties. Even if the IJN have them, they should have at least a secondary role for the fleet (fast transport, tender etc) Also, to be believable , these dummy carriers should have escorts and fighter cover. The novelty would also quickly wear off.

The unlucky career of Admiral Carlton Wright the commander of the Cruiser/Destroyer task force at Tassafaranga and later the ordnance trans-shipment depot in California infamous for the `Port Chicago Disaster.´ He was just tragically conventional in his response to his war. He became famous long after the war for his After Action Report of the Battle of Tassafaranga and the resulting commendations and medals. Few USN officers failed as dramatically as he, and Captain Bode of the Chicago. The Failures offer the best most human stories that are seldom told but less propagandistic offering relief from happy-talk and self-delusion.

The B-17 would have better luck if they were in column formation of three. Aircraft carriers weaved to evade the bombers but if their bombs were dropped in this formation they would have better luck at hitting them.

Not really. It's about building confidence and skill. If you can take a relatively untrained air group and give them a good kill against your more experienced foe you'll really build morale. And at this point in the war, the US needed that.
