Based on the testimonies collected so far, this seems to be the most accurate depiction of the facts: no solemn declarations, no drama, nothing but a quick shooting, and all was over. In other theatrical renditions, you can see the czar protecting Alexei with his own hand, or the girls trying to pray before being shot. Realistically, nothing like that did happen, as the killing went down very quickly, and I guess those who did not die instantly were too terrified to move and/or to say anything. The Banality of Evil-as Hannah Arendt would call it in reference to Nazi officer Eichmann-sometimes lies in this very lack of drama and memorable words/gestures: a headshot, and everything that used to be YOU is no more; none of your ideas, feelings, aspirations, dreams, and fears matter anymore. You are just a pile of flesh and bones that is going to rot away-quietly. The very thought of that gives me shivers.

The killings actually took about 20 minutes to complete. The Empress and Olga did try to bless themselves but were shot. Nikolai, Alexandra and everyone else were killed almost immediately by the bullets except for the children (this was because they had diamonds sewn into their clothing, which protected them as if it were a bullet vest). The executioners used bayonets on the children and eventually shot them in the head.

Yeah, it took 20 minutes because they first shot the Tsar, his servants and the queen after that the smoke of the bullets filled the room and they couldn't see anything so the soldiers left the room for some minutes and came back to kill the children, but their clothes had diamonds and jewels sewn in so them so the bullets didn't go through. So the head executioner shot Alexie in the throat, Olga and Tatiana in the head and throat as they were crouching against the wall and Anastasia and Marie were still alive they got knocked down by the backside of the gun
