I'm glad you brought up Ditko's Spider-Man. Something you forget, but rereading those issues Peter is a massive asshole. I don't think it's fair to say he deserved to be bullied, but he definitely brought a lot of his misery on himself.

Yes, and I miss that side of Peter. It's a more dynamic character when treated that way.

@@markclowe So, if the bullies promise not to beat up the assholes, do the assholes promise to not be assholes? If so, cool, fair trade. If not, accept the ass whippin’ as the cost of doing business. Or, better yet, don’t be a bully and don’t be an asshole. There’s no net value in either.

For some reason, these characters remind me of Napoleon Dynamite. I wonder if Jared Hess is a Dan Clowes fan? The characters have that same cringy awkwardness, not necessarily likable, but you have to watch them to see what they'll do next.

Man, this is fantastic. I loved this story. These guys are fucking awesome, I can totally imagine this being a lecture in University. I learn so much whenever I see one of their videos and hearing their thoughts/analysis of great works is incredibly educational. I love Clowes. Like a Velvet Glove cast in Iron fucked me up when I first read it in high school. I had never read a comic that left me as terrified, engrossed, sickened and mesmerized by.

Wonderful analysis, made me look at aspects of this story differently... Btw, I too had some Mandela Effect moments watching this, I think the way you described it, that it's because of the unconventional nature of the storytelling, how many moments don't appear on the page, that you have to add in from your imagination to complete the narrative, I think that's it.

That Oh, Andy panel...on the final page. So simple and yet so devastating. Kind of turning the whole fooling and not fooling Aunt May thing on its side. There’s a great Peter Parker becomes a murderous sci fi spider monster what if type story that I think was at least partially inspired by Death Ray.

Cool video as always. Death Ray is good, and Ice Haven is one of my favorite comics ever---such strong writing and baroque storytelling---and I really like Patience, which has some good pathos and humor and a handful of superb mind-melting pages.

Great analysis as usual, you guys are just constantly killing it...when do you have time to create comics?? Was very lucky to procure one of the Buenaventura prints (run of only 100, dayam!), my most prized Clowes possession along with an OK Soda advertising slick.
