I don’t think the purpose of the death sentence is about teaching people not to kill, but about ending the life of a person who would continue to do more harm than good if left to live and those whose crimes are so handouts that even if they never do wrong again they don’t deserve our tax dollars to support their life in prison. What I don’t understand is how some serial killers rot in jail and some people get the death sentence seemly fast. The viewers of this clip have no idea what happened to lead to this guys conviction. If he kidnapped, tortured, and then killed people, then yes, I think it was justified to get the death sentence, but if he got in a fight with someone and it escalated to a death, then I need to know how the law thought he should die.

The US is one of the few democracies that employs the death penalty, and the country also has the highest prison population in the world both in terms of total numbers incarcerated and also per capita. Yet the US has a higher murder and over all crime rate than most European Union countries. The EU prohibits its member countries from having the death penalty. This has been the situation in the US for man many decades. As fast as criminals are locked up and on occasion executed, US society produces more. The only logical conclusion is that there is something fundamentally wrong with US society.

Now I view in from a different perspective. 200 years ago when people committed crimes sending them to prison the way we do now wasn’t an option and so it was handled differently. We have no excuse today - the people involved in sentencing him to death will one day have to answer to God for their choice. If God can forgive and change Paul - he can forgive and change anyone.
