Js, during Raptor Assault they warned us about the death shake from the steering wheel. I do not think anyone got it, but the fact they are warning about it probably means this is a well known issue by Ford that they do not have a solution for. I went to Ford Raptor Assault on August 12, 2020 had a blast!
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad4 жыл бұрын
Holy Crap. When I did raptor Assault in 2017, they were not talking about the death shake at all. This is news to me and I wish more would talk about it. But even though Raptor assault is connected and funded by Ford, They have a separate company running it. They expect those trucks to have problems because of the abuse they take, and they literally go thru every inch of that suspension after every single class. You would hope that Ford take lessons learned from how those trucks do after heavy abuse. But the fact that my 2020 has this issues and has it consistently tells me they are not listening to those guys at Raptor Assault at all.

I'm so glad you speaking on this because I very been in the market for a Raptor for two years now. I don't want a brand new one can't afford one right now ( kids, college etc ) but I have test drove two 2010 SVTs, 3 - 2013 s and 1 2012 all of them had a front end shake that MADE ME VERY UNCOMFORTABLE PURCHASING THEM. I am convinced there is a problem with Ford Raptor front ends it's not possible for all these trucks from different locations in NY and NJ to all have the same issue. So thanks for undressing this issue and bringing it to the fore front , I think a recall is in order Ford, too much for this truck for this to be happening. Still looking for a good used Raptor in LI, NY .
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad2 жыл бұрын
2010-2014 have hydraulic front ends that won’t see this issue. This is only for 2017-present raptors and you won’t see it till you push the truck offroad. If you felt vibration on a test drive it’s most likely the tires. It’s hard to balance large offroad tires and if you’ve never driven a truck with 35s or larger, some vibration is normal due to the bigger tires. . Excessive is not and most likely due to either bad joints that on 2010-2014 trucks are probably overdue for replacement or a bad balance on the tires

Ties rods have been replaced twice. I’m not a fan of aftermarket tie rods. The Heim joints add some extra play in the steering that I don’t like. I had them in my 17, and did not like them. And they Heim joints wear out quick and have to be replaced often with heavy offroad use. Heim joints just don’t last as long as ball joints. At $75 each, it gets expensive to replace every few months.

Hi guys been watching your great videos for awhile; fellow gen2 raptor owner (2019). I haven't seen or heard any mention of scrub radius when discussing your problem. Adding scrub radius is notorious for causing excessive feedback in the steering wheel. Adding the 37s almost certainly added too much scrub radius, but fortunately certain adjustments (such as changing wheel offset) can bring it back to zero or slightly positive. Hope it helps, my apologies if this has already been explored.
@KeepItDirtyOffRoad3 жыл бұрын
Has not been brought up yet. I’ve replicated the issue with stock wheels at -34 offset and with the 37s at 0 offset. The 37s do make it worse but I can feel it and replicate as regularly with the stock 35s.
@weldoid3 жыл бұрын
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I wonder what the stock scrub radius measurement is? Maybe ford got it wrong for hard off-roading? I mean maybe the front end geometry was designed with a pavement bias (since most owners don't go off the road much). I'm not near my truck otherwise I'd measure. I think it'd be worth while to get the SR close to zero (if it's not already) and see if that helps.It could be adjusted via UCA length if one was set on a certain tire/wheel combo. Good reason for a new video? I'm sure you already know this, but you can get a quick rough measurement of the SR by turning the front wheels left and right on clean concrete so they leave marks. Then measure between the centers of the marks. Compare this to the front track width measurement (center to center of the front tires at ride height)...

True. The death wobble in the jeeps and super duty’s though is a little different. Cheap or worn ball joints cause most of that. And it’s more constant. Ditch the stock setup, you are totally over driving the limits of the live valve capability!

I'm definitely at the limits of what the truck can handle. I have tried to disconnect the live valve, that little cable where the delete would go into, and saw no change. Here is the odd thing. It does not feel like to road is moving the wheels. I feels and sounds like something is activating the electronic motor on the steering rack and oscillating the front wheels and the steering wheel at full power. In the videos you can hear how loud the shaking is. I think the Live Valve are contributing. Who knows, they may be the system activating the steering rack somehow. I don't know. I took the truck back to stock and this weekend I'm going to replicate. If it happens then we know it's not the upgrades and something wrong with this truck. Disable ABS? Seems that it is associated to braking only.. Perhaps a dirty or bad ABS Sensor? or chaffed wire and the system is trying to compensate for a wheel breaking more than another.. My brother in law had a bad ABS sensor on a truck whos name we won't mention here but it violently yanked the wheel out of his hands. Luckily it didn't cause an accident.
