Unlikely that you'll see this, CMilk, but Brazilian infrastructure is actually not terrible and they do actually put supports in. It is actually pretty rare that there are accidents or disasters that are directly related to build quality, with, of course, very notable exceptions. The favelas are also not a good representative of what the majority of construction is like in the country. At the very least, big urban centers tend to have decently built infrastructure.

I'm like: Yes the flag used as building material is rude however the Chinese tourist should have told the translator about the issue and kept it rolling. He ain't Chairman Mao and this attitude can get his ass whooped. He's very fortunate that the people didn't come out to "meet" him. Pissed off, impoverished people + a priviledged asshole being authoritive in their space = someone has stepped up in the wrong neighborhood.

Yeah even if you see your country's flag you can explain to them that it's a flag and ask them to remove it preferably give money to them to buy some more cloth pieces. A lot of older refugees would not be able to recognise even their own country flag because many of them are not literate and have hardly gone outside their small community. They won't even know about a country called China.

Not really, Chinese made stuff is already everywhere. The countries they intended to take the loans won't be very good trading partners anyways. Not saying it was to help, ofc not, but I think debt was the intended result. It wasn't just money either, China would demand key locations like ports or military facilities. China knows that a war with the US would result in a naval blockade. They have a very narrow access to the ocean and a blockade wouldn't be too difficult. It's amazing any country took them up on the offer. Once they see they can't even have their own workers they have to know it's just a one sided deal. But I guess if you're dirt poor and desperately need a cash injection, no one else will loan you money, the terms may not look so bad.

While Serpentza is correct about rebar being a really good idea, he's wrong about the immediate effect of its exclusion. I have renovated plenty of old brickwork without it, and none of it was this fragile. The oldest was 200 years old, and it was a hell of a lot more sturdy than seen in the video. We retrofitted rebar of course, but it had held up without for a really long time. There was a large chunk from a shell still lodged in it an old conflict. For 50 years of that there had been a busy intersection there, and it was only recently that it had begun to show signs of fatigue. And then you have "Chinese quality."
@buisnessclass9520
@buisnessclass9520 26 күн бұрын
You're right. But they used modern way but no rebar that's why it failed. Usually old style the clay bricks are solid and hard unlike hollowblocks, has holes to allow mortar to enter thru the clay brick to act as substrate or framework when mortar has dried. With hollow blocks being crumbly, rebar is needed plus good mortar

At 42:58, I don't think that a traffic jam would have caused all the cars to fall in, because there physically isn't enough collapsed road for 40+ cars and 1+ bus to all be on top of the collapsed section. I'm guessing that the road was filled with traffic but that it was all moving at a high speed. After the collapse started, the drivers would have had difficulty seeing the collapse due to the lack of street lights, and even if they saw it, they would have had a tough time trying to brake hard for a collapse on a potentially-blind turn.

Having worked in several sub-Saharan Africa states (Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Guinea Bissau) I can ensure you that workers will steal literally everything that isn’t nailed down, from fuel in trucks, tools, cables, etc. which is (together with corrupt politicians demanding their cuts) the PRIMARY reason why it’s so risky, so unsafe, and so expensive to do any kind of work in Africa and why NOTHING ever works. The difference is that Western companies have NGOs up their asses, so they will usually put more money aside for guards (in some countries we had a guard with every truck driver, just to say), and if they find a thief they normally call a contact within the military to “sort things out”, because the police is absolutely USELESS and will never, ever lift half a finger to do anything other than demanding more money from you for doing nothing. Some countries, like Ghana for example, are far better than others and there you can almost work normally, but the vast majority are an absolute disaster where nothing works, nothing moves, everything gets stolen or embezzled, your contracts vanish through corruption after coups only to reappear as sub-contracts with lowered payments because the firm that got them is incapable of actually doing the job (hi Gabon). Chinese companies instead will never accept those losses or program for them, so they will treat the workers like absolute garbage and use physical punishments immediately… which btw is useless as well, because if they had any experience with Africa they would know that an African worker who steals is already ok with being beaten up. That’s because being beaten up is the USUAL punishment that awaits thieves in Africa, so thieves there are simply used to being beaten to a pulp by crowds, and once they recover they’ll just go back to steal like they were doing before. This isn’t to justify what this Chinese boss does (on the contrary), but just to give a bit of an insight to all the people who never worked in Africa and have no idea of how things “function” there.

@CR1992..
@CR1992.. 26 күн бұрын
Well, that's not how things function there and this is how people go places and they vanish from the face of the earth. If you work anywhere even in the US things disappear. I've seen it everywhere, all the time. There's a reason why we have copper wiring disappearing from street lighting, catalytic converters being cut from vehicles when they're parked. People invading other people's houses. Armed robberies, literally everything you'll find there you'll find everywhere and especially in the US. There's not a state I've worked in where that's not the case where population is high and revenues are low. That's why companies need insurance, because such things happen on top of what may be qualified an act of God. That's also why those nations also have laws and law enforcement. I promise you that African bosses wouldn't do that to their employees even if they stole because eventually they face consequences.. I know that also because I follow many entrepreneurs in various African nations and when they experience it they make public posts to shame the thieves, then they get the police involved. That's because they don't think themselves superior humans like those Chinese bosses do before those Africans. Why can the law work for the African entrepreneur and not for the big Chinese government backed corporations, and what the hell gives them the right to think that they can create their own law? THIS is the issue, it has nothing to do with the way things work there. We have Africans in the diaspora scammed by family members even, you buy land and send money to build on it. They send you photos of a project that they never started or started for themselves. These Africans don't go back employing big arms to beat up their family members. They go through the law. This issue here is that the Chinese people like the one in the video think that they own Africa and Africans already. What would you say next about their signs that ban locals from their establishments? Ban locals from the restaurants? Is that because there's something special about their restaurants that will be taken while other locals have property functioning and profitable restaurants that cater to everyone? It's 100% racism. They do this everywhere, in every country they step foot in on the continent. We've seen certain south Africans spread xenophobia and accuse other black Africans of taking everything from them, but they didn't do that for the Chinese people there. But the same Chinese people will turn around and post signs that they're not welcome in their establishment. What's the reason for it?

The reason that there were so many vehicles on that collapsed highway was because people were allowed to access the highway for free after midnight of Labour Day. The highway in question was shut down last year due to landslides from the slop above the road. This time, it was apparently caused by heavy rain that saturated the earth which compromised the structural integrity. Long story short, they didn’t build a sufficient drainage system for the highway. Also, it was discovered that the road itself was not built to standard, short cuts were again taken during the construction.

OH MY GUY'S, My older brother and I went tubing after a big snow storm. Me being the younger brother had to go first, whether I liked it or not. The first part of the run was bunny hill material. After a couple of sweeping turns it quickly steepened as it funneled into a wash. I was locked on to the Tube, thinking I must be getting close to the bottom as it was getting light fast too fast. In that instant every thing opened up and I realized too late that drop was a good 19-20' drop. A drop that had been quarried out over the past summer. I was not locked on as I thought as I looked at nothing but snow. Tons of it piled higher because of drifting from the lasts storms. IT saved my ass that day but still, a hard impact, knocking me momentarily senseless. When I came back to reality I cold hear my brother checking to see if I was alive and if it was safe. I survived so it must be safe "RIGHT". Knowing I would pay a heavy toll I yelled "No problem as long as lock onto your Tube". Was all I got out as he launched out of the shoot and we discovered that...Locking on to the Tube was a bad idea... Well worth the Ass Kicking, BRO RIP

I have an interesting story about an experience in Chinatown in Boston Ma. I went to a large restaurant that was 100% Chinese patrons during Chinese new year in 2020. This was in the very beginning of COVID when it was still mostly in China. On my way out of the restaurant, while squeezing through the crowded entryway, I had an older man cough directly in my face from about 12 inches away. It almost seemed forced and I thought it was definitely intentional at the time. Needless to say, I came down with a strange cold shortly after that. While I wasn’t very sick and recovered quickly, I lost my sense of taste and smell for a couple of weeks and remember thinking it was unlike any cold I’ve ever had. This was before COVID was widespread in the US so I didn’t think I had Covid at the time but once I learned more about the symptoms, I became convinced that is what I had. I guess my question is, was the cough intentional, if so, was it to send a message that I wasn’t welcome there, or was the guy an intentional super spreader? Or maybe the guy was just an asshole? I guess I’ll never know but I’d be curious to know if anyone had any similar experiences around that time.

Guys there's a function in your OBS that lets you bind each clip to one of your keys on your keyboard, or your stream deck so that keeping it pressed will keep playin the clip until you let go. I think this will save you a lot of time and is a big quality of life improvement right there. Thank you for your amazing work

Mouse movement devices are used to frustrate employee productivity tracking software. Some companies are obnoxious and unreasonable about that monitoring and seem to think that lack of mouse movement means lack of productivity. That's a very useful device.

Authoritarian redundancy is basically what caused the Chernobyl disaster. Because you have to run those cold restart drills on your rickety graphite moderated deathtrap of a nuclear reactor even after it's been running at emergency broadcast levels to cover increased demands. Hint: It's not a "cold" restart if you do it while the darn thing is still glowing...
@Threemore650
@Threemore650 23 күн бұрын
I had premonitions of nuclear disaster coming - I gave all my stuff away and took a one way ticket to India - yeah, such was Cold War paranoia in the mid 80’s. Two weeks later I was in the high Himalayas in a cave where the news of Chernobyl filtered up as ‘nuclear devastation in Europe’! Eventually I came down from my mountain and met new tourists and got better info. But damn. Shame you don’t know a premonition is real until after it happens… I also have dud ones, but I don’t ignore highly specific dreams. Currently’must lock all the doors’ dreams… sometimes I wake up on my feet with that in my mind. Hardly a premonition at this point though.

There is something seriously wrong with the mindset of being upset at a flag used to prop up a shanty house instead of seeing why it had to be used for a shanty house and feeling for those in lesser circumstances than yourself. The corrugated roof looks to me like fiber-cement (maybe if it is old, asbestos-cement which is banned these days at least in europe), but without the fibers and bad cement. Made properly, these hold a normal person, but if it has not enough fibers, it becomes quite brittle.
