The pain IS worth it, although at the time it happens it can be devastating. I lost 4 cats in just 9 months (cancer is a right bastard) and thought I was going to break. When Pandora (20 when she passed away) died, I had to run from the vet office, down the road to a wooded area so I could literally scream and spent almost 5 minutes throwing up the pain was so hard. And currently we have my oldest girl, 19 in just a few weeks. She is getting rickety and unsteady on her pins, sleeps more and more and her fur is thinning and I know soon the time is gonna come and I know the pain is going to come with it. But 19 years of laughing, cuddles, tears quietly falling in fur and just those years of joy with my Harlequin is something I will never trade for what will be. There can be an almost desperate need to make someone who has never had a pet understand why they matter so much, to make them SEE what you do. The idea of having to explain it to other species is a great concept for a short story. That said? I gotta get offline for a bit and go cuddle my old girl, I do believe. Her younger sisters are already starting to stay around her more and I don't want to waste time with her.
