Makes me so sad as I have loads of memories attached to Debenhams. Got my ears pierced there, had a job in the cafe as a teen, got countless leavers disco dresses from there (wasn't a prom back then!) I'll miss it! Pandemic aside I think it suffered a similar fate to TRU (extremely poor upper management seemingly determined to run it into the ground...)

Debenhams was the only place I knew of that had the jeans that I could only get in the US. Sad its gone for good now.

Department stores are well past their sell by date, John Lewis, Fenwick, House of Fraser are all struggling. They could survive if they adapted to the times, but they are stubborn and stuck at least 20 years in the past

I'm curious. How would you adapt them to the times?

All three of those will survive in some shape or form. John Lewis has Waitrose as a backbone, and is still renowned for its good quality homeware and customer service. Fenwick is more of a novelty but the ones closest to me (York + Newcastle) always seem to be packed. House of Fraser is a failed store. They’ve already confirmed they’re phasing out the brand and rolling out ‘Frasers’ completely. It’s essentially the brand with a load of Mike Ashley’s brands under (Sports Direct, Flannels, GAME etc). I have not been to one personally but I can see it working out.

This looks alot like newcastle because of THE GATE I saw outside of the upstairs windows, hate the escalators in the gate, scare the life out if me lol

how in Gods name are they going to get that shop unit refilled with a new retailer it's probably much too large for any other retailer, and as dept stores everywhere arent doing great i doubt there are an others i can think of that could or even would nor would want to

I know in my local one they're considering having a sort of shopping arcade with lots of smaller independent stores inside.

@@eoz182 id imagine that would be the only suitable use, it wouldnt lend itself to something like poundland, b&m or home bargains, maybe Primark could utilize the large space.

Yup, they're going to struggle if they try to fill the whole thing with a single tenant. As EH says below, I think most will split up by floor and maybe even have multiple tenants per floor.
