Just watched Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison for the first time last week and I'm in love with both of these actors. I find their off-screen friendship, maybe infatuation, just fascinating.

From Kerr's biography: "Laura Nightingale, a wardrobe girl on the set(of HEAVEN KNOWS, MR ALLYSON) remembered one day when Deborah told Mitchum that she hurt her foot on the rocky ground: "He just kneeled down, unlaced her white sneakers, removed them and massaged her feet. It was the lovely way he did it. No show, no affection, just all feeling. Then he put her sneakers back on and said kind of brusquely, 'Gotta keep you alive for the next scene.'" Deborah was so touched her eyes were full of tears."

Wow, I was thinking about Deborah and googled her to see her academy award acceptance. Then wondered what Mitchum thought of her, 4 films together, her warm comments about him in an interview here, knowing he was a tough rebel type early in Hollywood, think he got arrested once, maybe in 40's and I think a lot of infidelity. Then I read the quote fm him at end of this video. Isn't life fascinating. This is so touching. Watched The Grass Is Greener on TCM other night, looked forward to it, remembering the definite attraction to each other, a kind of unspoken communication. His character, the suavely brusque American millionaire who just goes after her. His compliments threw her and the vulnerability she would show was captivating.

Love Mitchum so much. Such an underrated talent and the films he made with Deborah are some of my favourites. Even the little clip at the end from Reunion at Fairborough. Thanks so much for sharing. This has gone straight in my favourites.

The greatest platonic love story in Hollywood. As different as they were, they were lifelong soulmates, these two.

for "Sundowners" she should have won, and she thought so, too. but you can't beat Liz, coming back from death, can you. and you must realize, and she did, that you can't. but in terms of performance, she was right to have "really minded". glad you care as much about her as i do. one of sweetest, most talented, most intelligent star ladies i ever met, and treasure the memories of it to this day. just remember, in terms of Oscar injustice, Greta Garbo did not win for "Camille", nor Bette Davis for "All About Eve." i used to care about all this, when there were movies and stars of that stature, but, sadly, as like many, no more, thank you. I loved Deborah Kerr - she was classy, beautiful and intelligence through out all her performance. Also the chemistry with several actors were unbelievable - Robert Mitchum and (King and I - can't remember his name) In fact, the actor played King and I requested Deborah Kerr because there wonderful chemistry. In fact he made several movies with her before King and I.

my dearly departed mother-in-law was a big deborah kerr fan, and i love mitch. wish i could have shown her this... as we all know by now - mitch did not suffer fools and had a particularly low opinion of hollywood and its workers, but he had deep respect for deborah kerr who apparently (quite against her image!) could hold her own against him, drink for drink!

they loved each other, but did not act on it, according to Deborah, whom i interviewed--twice. a very sweet, smart lady, who should have been Oscared for "Sundowners" but Liz got it, and deservedly. Marlene Dietrich called it "the death-bed award" but she was still steamed that Mike Todd deserted her for Liz. interviewed Dietrich, too, but not about that. scary, she was, until she turned that off, and gave you what she knew you wanted, and had to have. a total pro. and singularly glamorous, at, i think, 66 at the time. and a vision in nubby orange Chanel. in NY, at her upper Park Ave apt. unforgettable, as interview experiences go. "grass is greener" Deborah confided to me, suffered, because director Stanley Donen was too involved with a "Lady Beatty" to rehearse sufficiently. pic shows that. shame, Stanley. R
@IreneXandra7 жыл бұрын
Are the interviews available to read? I agree that Dietrich is a fascinating personality and the embodiment of the glamorous movie star. Not so much an Oscar contender, in my opinion, as Deborah, who deserved to have at least an award. From her 6 nominations I would have chosen The Sundowners too, but also The Night of the Iguana or The Innocents, for which she was not even nominated.
@ycoz58142 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's amazing! Kerr said that about Mitchum? Was it off-the-record? Because I get the sense that there was not only a physical attraction, but something more, and circumstances kept them from crossing a line. One of those couples who can never be together, but there was always that 'What if?' I find that fascinating.

no, sorry, don't have them to send for you to read. summed them up as well as i can, for god knows what reason. yes, Kerr said she felt "overlooked" in 1961, for "The Innocents" should have got a nomination, instead of Page. Kerr's last time at bat, as it turned out. she would have, and should have, won for "Sundowners" but you really cannot ignore the drama of Liz almost dying that year, and giving a better performance in "Butterfield 8" than she thought. you really can't. i would have given it to her for "Cat" but, darn, Susan Hayward had to win. so it goes in Hollywood. "Iguana'? not in the running. Huston cut the part in half, and wisely. it was Ava's show. Kerr detested Ava, and for the right reasons.
@IreneXandra7 жыл бұрын
OK, thank you. She was overlooked too many times and too many Oscars were given for the wrong reasons. She was superior in the acting department to many of those winners. Sadly, that's the way things go in Hollywood.
