Back in the early 60's when this would be on television every December 7th my father always got upset watching this movie when Montgomery Cliff started shooting pool. He would hollar that they didn't have a pool table in the day room. The buildings used were my father's buildings for his company on December 7th.

Deborah and Burt's scenes stand the test of time. They are as relevant today as they were in 1953...at least to the extent that woke 2021 culture allows.

Thank you so much for the information! I just ordered it as I still am one of those people with a VCR. LOL! I'd honestly given up trying to find a copy. I even contacted A & E to see if I could get it from them! I was told that it had been out of production for a while. This gets me one step closer to completing my collection which is now about 40 films. I've decided that there are a few that I wouldn't watch again, therefore, I will not attempt to get those.

I found it on Amazon item # 111, page 10, Movies & TV, Deborah Kerr. I wanted to get it so bad but it is on VHS, 1 only new, $18.95. I don't know anyone who kept a VCR unfortunately. Thought I would let you know. I will keep looking, would LOVE to have it or be able to see it on here.

She was nicer about her in the press! Apparently, when she went to visit Zimmerman she said "What's this I hear that you're choosing that jumped-up British c*** over me!" He explained the kicker in the reveal (the audience not quite believing Deborah's character was a slut and as a result being extra sympathetic) and said Joan was totally fine with it, totally understood. They had used Joan to get the ball rolling but he had no intention of using her. She got some other part instead.

I know! It should be here in a few days. I'm beside myself with glee. I will try to figure out how to convert video tape to DVD in order to share it with other DK fans on KZbin. One of my coworkers just told me that he purchased a converter for $40! I'll have to take a look at it as I'm a real dolt when it comes to technology beyond turning on a computer and searching the Web. LOL!

well, the publicity on Eternity was that Crawford was cast, objected to the beach scene and the bathing suit, so...they had to find another. and somebody suggested Kerr, and Zinneman said, "now, why didn't i think of her?" "Dear Freddie," Kerr said to me in an interview w/her years later. pure fiction? Crawford storming in like that does make a better story. Crawford. for sure, could have been good. also Rita Hayworth, if you think about it. but Kerr was simply terrific, in a career-changing part, and if not for incandescent Audrey in "Roman Holiday, she"would have won a well-deserved Oscar. movies, and stars, were a part of our lives then. now, not so much. does anybody care whether or not Leo makes another picture? to make the point.

Zinnemann confirms the story that Crawford was the first choice (mainly Harry Cohn's choice), but she wanted to have her own cameraman and wardrobe designer. Deborah's agent happened to be dropping her name as a possible Karen when both Zinnemann and producer Buddy Adler were fed up with Crawford's demands. And they were both enchanted with the idea of casting against type. I agree that Deborah was terrific in the role, because she could bring depth to a character that other actresses would have portrayed superficially. But her role and screen time were probably not enough for an Oscar. Especially that I'm sure there were a lot of publicity efforts to impose Audrey Hepburn as the new girl in Hollywood. As much as I like Audrey and Roman Holiday, I don't think it's an Oscar worthy role / performance.

What a classy, bodacious babe. Very talented actor. So sexy. And she doesn't have any tattoos! Imagine that, girls. :-) Do women like Ms. Kerr exist today?

Not even close! I was just thinking that over the weekend when I was having my own Deborah Kerr marathon at my house. Very few of the "stars" today actually have talent. All of the DK films I watched have withstood the test of time. I think that very few films made today will still be remembered fondly 20 years from now.
@IreneXandra
@IreneXandra 10 жыл бұрын
2legit64 True. But there are 2 things that make me sad: I think her talent was not fully used, Hollywood especially wanting her in the same ladylike role over and over again (to her own despair) and secondly the fact that she gets less recognition than other "stars" of the same era, that don't even come close to her talent.
@2legit64
@2legit64 10 жыл бұрын
You're so right about her not getting the same recognition as others of her era. What roles would you have liked to have seen her play? I think of that a lot when I'm watching movies. It was obvious that she was very good with comedy as well as drama. I'd read somewhere that she had wanted the leading role in "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne" which Maggie Smith was absolutely magnificent in. Andre Soares wrote to me that he thought that she would have been wonderful as Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" or Jean Brodie. It certainly would have been great to see. If you haven't read his article titled "What Lies Beneath," you should find it and read it. It's one of my faves.
@IreneXandra
@IreneXandra 10 жыл бұрын
2legit64 Good question. I think she'd have been wonderful in complex roles, not the traditional positive character, but having moral issues, being unpleasant, and even being a villain. Somewhere in the line of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Long Day's Journey Into Night that she did in theatre. Also, less women roles that she herself called "decorative" and "exciting as an oyster". More of the seductive woman, that I think she could easily do without even removing her winter coat (as in The Journey). Basically any role that would have got as much out of her as an actress and a woman. I had read the article :) and I agree with it and that is one of the reason that I love her, for what I see beneath the first image...
