I have a lot of love for these Detroit diesels. It seems that a lot of people hear the horror stories, and get scared to give them a chance. All they really need is a little bit of refinement, and they can be perfectly capable and reliable. I loved my 94 6.5 because of the economy too! Easily one of the best aspects of these engines. I would routinely get 23 mpg, not bad considering it was in a 3/4 ton long bed gmt400. You should take a look into the "6500 optimizer" it is produced by am general, and pretty well solves every issue that the general motors 6.2-6.5 engines were prone to having. Fully girdled bottom end, more molybdenum in the block casting, heads completely reworked, main webbing areas reinforced, and the list goes on. Also produce 250 hp and 440 ft lbs, in their stock form.

The most ironic motor on the planet. GM had moved to the Duramax so they couldn't/wouldn't support the Detroit - so they sold it to Navistar - the guys who set light-truck-diesels back 20 years with the 6.0.... however, that motor (aka the marine motor) has all the upgrades and has made it one of the best light-truck diesels available.... not just that but due to all the hate, they're dirt cheap at gov auction. I swear by my Detroits.... let the haters hate, my pocketbook loves those haters.

Before watching the video, I'll tell you why this one grabbed my eye: My parents used to own two G20 conversion vans(One was an 82 or 83, the other an 89), both with 6.2L N/A diesels.. Got decent mileage for such big rigs, so this swap brings back memories (though the vans actually came with the motors, they weren't swapped). One my dad converted to his 'work van' where he carried his tools in it for doing remote work on trucks and heavy equipment. That poor half ton van carrying 4k lbs of tools sure did have a hard life(And sat much lower than the other van due to the weight). Slow as frig too. We also discovered that the 700R4 was a piece of junk many times over, on both vans.

Cool Swamp man, well done! I'm a little concerned about the starter sounding abrasive against the flywheel. Have you got the little triangulation bracket attached to the double stud at the other end of the starter? That's vitally important, GM didn't upsize the starter bolts from the gas engines, and when and if they break which is just a matter of time, they sometimes take a chunk of the block and then you're dead. The only weeks spot really in 6.2 and 6.5 is the starter boss area and those undersized gas engine starter bolts

Dang that is so similar to mine it's not even funny. Mine is a standard length 1983. My rad is a 5 row core with the stock tanks. I kept the doghouse pretty stock. At least the seal area. Did some fiberglass work on it to get the massive 300 turbo to fit. Already have the marine injectors and low compression pistons. I weigh about 8,000lbs though. Put 1 ton axles under it though. Mostly to keep the back alive so a van 14bolt full float axle does the work back there. The aftermarket turbo is a snugged in pretty tight compared to Gregs. The 4L80E is necessary because the stock 700R4 is too weak. Even mildly built it won't last long. I used a PCS controller for the transmission. Suspect they might have built his easy TCU. Greg, if you are ever in WA, you got to look me up. I'll show you what I did to make it 4 wheel drive. :)

@Patrick Baptist that would be an issue if it was a 3500 dually a 2500 or 3500 single rear wheel won't be rated for enough weight for power to matter.... As for reliability the engines that were build in Mexico has plenty of inferior castings that gave the engines a bad name... GM eventually fixed the problem and the engines built in elsewhere never had a casting problem... As for things like PMD injection pumps, the vac pump, and the lift pump... Those issues and this whole engine can be bullet proofed for under $1,500CAD to the point where you never have another reliably issue.... In a 3500 Dually the 6.5L will get a good 26MPG stock, 30+MPG if you put another $2,000 in fuel economy upgrades into it. You can't beat those numbers in any other dually.

And I'm still trying to get a hold of a 95'ish high top in good condition for an l94 6.2 swap and run hydrogen. Stock 403/417? I can't back down. I just like the third party conversions. The interiors are timeless. The hard part is the independent front end swap, but if you can swap an LS into cars that aren't even gm, then how hard could it be to swap some stock gm truck/SUV drivetrain parts to a van that's actually gm? I saw a dope deal like his just recently: Two vans for 1000! Bad engine on a good body w/ great interior conversion, and a driving van that he was trying to get rid of with the first van. This dude is at 300 and I'm looking at 1000 for two well, one, and one third vans, but my dad and my brothers, (Honda heads) (and I didn't really want to ask a friend to help me get them because they would probably think I'm nuts) don't seem to share the vision. That's what you have to go through if you're actually looking for one of these things.

Mark K. Kiyabu 6.5s bolt right in, hardest part is finding the donor for the engine harness and under dash harness, repinning the harness isn’t much fun, ask me how I know

Since it's an '06, an LLY Dmax should be a direct swap (in terms of bolting straight to the frame, without requiring extensive modifications, that Dmax would be your easiest option).

Anything on the planet would be better than a 202 iron block straight 6 petrol engine, as in Australia. In the UK they came with a 6 cylinder Cortina running gear, it drove like a car, a cut snake. The great train robbery has a nice example in a car chase.

I've got the same.van but.1990. 6.2l. I've been wanting to do the exact same thing-adding a turbo. Banks doesnt make a turbo.

I bought the last Banks turbo kit for the 6.2-5L diesel VAN back in 1998; now he can't even supply a new cross-over pipe I need, so had to have a muff shop make one.

Good to see that thing moving under it's own power!!! Once you get the internals tightened up you can turn up the fuel pump and throw some propane and N2O at it and see how fast it can shred the tires!!! 🤪🤪🤪
