Rich from a 63 year old retired airline aircraft mechanic that's worked on everything over the years, YOU ARE THE BOSS brother. What a great truck, and a a great accomplishment, stuffing that big Cat under the hood.
@PorscheRacer14 Жыл бұрын
This is the truck every guy wanted to dream of and build, but would be illogical, insanely out of reach and too damn complex, big and daunting. And yet, you've made an incredible series documenting the success, the head scratchers, the failures, and the trials to get to this. Even if no one else ever copies this, I hope they see the thought process and determination from this as a blueprint for success. Success in starting, success in keeping going and success in over coming challenges to reach a running project. You, your family, friends and crew, have a great 2024!

Don't feel too bad about the hose, Rich. I was a hose routing guy on several vehicles and we don't actually do much in the way of cycle testing calculations. We take our best guess in CAD, we build prototypes (which almost always get revised), then we shake the whole truck (like... really, really, shake it... for a long, long, time) and see what breaks. Prototypes get driven to lunch and on errands all the time exactly to find those sorts of gremlins while they're close to home. You basically did it the same way the "pros" do. We've even fixed our share on the side of the road. 😂

I was taught on the older rigs that you need to "milk" the power steering to press the air bubbles out while the engine is off. The idea is that fluid flowing has cavitation that prevents bubbles from being bleed out. Lift it again and cycle it back and forth 10 times lock to lock and see if the whine clears up.

I feel you on the working out the bugs part. I did a frame swap (2wd-->4wd)/4.8LS/4l80e swap on my squarebody and there isnt much I havent had to do twice. Between 40 year old parts you thought would be ok (they werent), new parts that were bad (bad new caliper which mislead me to believe I had a bad trans as it wouldnt shift out of 1st), wire chaffing from vibration, half a dozen brake line leaks, transfer case slipping out of low (still havent figured that out even after disassembling for a second time.), and installing the front calipers upside down. Im no professional mechanic obviously but the struggle is real.

As handy and knowledgeable as Rich is, to hand-build a truck and have it break down several times already, is a testament to how hard it is to build a reliable diesel truck. I don't mean to be stepping on any potential sponsors foot, just saying there's other options. Hope the new year brings the best for everyone.

My Super Duty has the V10, way down on torque compared to your Cat, but it came with the 4.30's, and even with 31" tires on it, it was too much gear for even that engine. I switched to the 3.73 just because it was a factory option and what a world of difference. It pulls so much harder through first gear, mostly because you don't run out of RPM at 15 mph, and even towing I've had that truck to its max tow rating with and without the 4.30's and it has zero problem moving that 10,000 lb trailer either way. You will not regret the gear change at all because I certainly don't. MPG around town is about the same but up on the highway I jumped from 12 mpg to mid 14's mpg if I keep it 65 or under. Huge improvement there. I've even beat 10 mpg towing heavy on country roads (sub 55 speeds). It was pretty consistently 7-8 mpg before. She's no diesel, but that seems to be a sweet spot gear wise for these SRW trucks.

So my 2 cents worth.
