How to Help a Cinchy Horse

Here is what I did to "fix" my gelding. He had gotten really bad. He'd stand until you went to step on and then blow up. I was working on a dude ranch at the time and I had an entire Girl Scout troop mounted and ready to go. I was in a hurry and forgot to untrack him. Long story short, my knee made it to the middle of the cantle and he bucked me off. Then he bucked through the Girl Scouts. I lost 75% of that ride. So, I figured I had better fix him or sell him. I tried several things...lunging, pulling slowly, all the usual things that people say work but they didn't work on Red. What did work was I pulled my cinch normally and just stood next to him and stroked him and said whoa calmly until he relaxed. Then I stepped on and just asked him to stand. To my surprise, that worked. He never offered to be cinchy ever again. I think somewhere in his history he got confused as to what was being asked of him. He thought he was supposed to buck. Obviously, this won't work for every horse. But it might be worth a try. It worked for me... 😊😊😊

I've been riding Tennessee Walking Horses for 20+ years trail riding and big game hunting all over Montana. They've taken me everywhere I've wanted to go, packed elk, been around grizzly bears, wolves, whatever. They do not stumble in rough country. They can cover the country. My first one did a 20 mile ride in Yellowstone, in three hours twenty minutes. They aren't the horse for roping or cutting cattle, but for getting from here to there, they are the horse.

Pat as alway great information. My late Grandpa said a thousand times "If you get in a hurry with a horse , your in a hurry to get hurt" . Haven't been on a horse in 10 year now, kind of miss it. Reguards from the Bitterroot.

When I was a kid I had a mare that was cinchy. She would “squat” (stretch her front legs out and “bow” down, in a sense). Of course, I was young and dumb and finally learned not to cinch her up so tight immediately. I started doing essentially what you are doing and she finally got over it. But back in those days hardly any of the older guys told you anything to help you. You just had to watch and learn or learn the good way of doing things from experiencing the bad, haha.

Thanks for the insights. I inherited a cinchy horse. He was well trained to freeze up and not move. When he did finally move , all hell broke loose. I would untract him him by lounging but it never quite got the job done right, We'll see if I can make it work right.

Lunging is not the same as the groundwork in this video. It does not engage the mind of the horse and does not disengage the hindquarter.

Nice! I'm going to try this with my horse I'm in the middle of breaking to ride. He had about 5 rides on him when he was 3, but has never been really ridden or trained. He's 6 now. When you go to put a blanket on him, he raises his head and stiffens up and kind of shuts down. Does the same thing when you put a saddle on him. I've tied him up for hours with it on just to get him used to it. He doesn't pull back or anything. But still, I want him to be comfortable when he's being saddled. I've tried putting the blanket on and taking it off. Desensitizing. He just shuts down. Any ideas besides what you are doing in this video?

I may have missed it, but I noticed he’s got a white patch right where he may have been rubbed raw by the front rigging or around there. Is that the case? Or is that just a white spot. Just curious.

It's likely from an old saddle sore from an ill fitting saddle or dirty pad. He had those marks when we got him,

I notice lots of buckaroos ride in those wide monel stirrups. Is there a reason for that other than looking cool? Also, I understood that it was poor cowboy etiquette to get out ahead of the head wrangler or cow boss when saddling up or heading out. What is your opinion on that?

The larger footbed is comfortable for long distances or all day in the saddle and the metal can help protect the stirrup from getting banged up too bad.
