Love your page Deb! Former avid skier here, can't ski anymore due to no meniscus and osteoarthritis in left knee- great and accurate information- due to your clips I was inspired to test my knee out after 27 years of not skiing- it was like riding a bike but could only ski a couple of very short runs- I got the bug and it was good for my soul- your clips have inspired me to figure out a way to get back on my boards on a regular basis. Thanks.

Deb, I will put it as simple as possible, you are an excellent instructor! Not all experts can breakdown ski techniques into bite sized pieces that are easy to digest and understand, but you have that ability! I will continue to watch, listen, learn, and apply your lessons to improve my performance on the mountain because my family and I LOVE to SKI! We thumbed our nose at this Pandemic and took a trip to Colorado this past February and hit Keystone, Vail, and Beaver Creek and had a blast. We skied nine straight days and even squeezed in some night skiing at Keystone. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos as Your energy and teaching technique clicks with me! Best, Jeff

I coach ski instructors at timberline and I use Deb and her style with kids constantly as a model for my own teaching and for how our staff can be successful with children. None of our instructors has any kind of pedigree to match Deb's outstanding credentials. None the less I always see them with their guest delivering key moments to build solid fundamentals which makes me proud.

What techniques? Not sure you have any idea what you are talking about. She throws out terms like “shape”, “power”, etc., but with no explanation and then follows up with random comments of encouragement. This is not how a lesson is taught and the lack of knowledge why you will probably not advance beyond intermediate.

I really enjoyed your ability to engage, and continuing to maintain the attention with this young skier. That's a lesson in itself. The manner is which the message is delivered should be the "exact same" when conveying these principles to skiers of any age. Thanks for the continuation of your tips and drills.

@@AtomicB-zq2cw It's not necessarily because she was a ski racer. It's her ability and willingness to observe, communicate effectively, progress students at a reasonable rate, make it fun, and more. There is a lesson in a lesson here. When I taught skiing one of the things I learned was when teaching kids, allow them to try things without watching them, thus the "follow me" idea. If they aren't getting they will let you know (and you can sometimes sneak a peak). You are giving them permission not to be perfect and that's important.

Negative as I lead I always know my students location and condition. I listen and I hear edges grinding and hear all the things I need to know to start a lesson with out the intimidating "I'm watching you ski" part... tune out the visual go right to asking "how many times in each turn does your skis jam up, catch edges and chatter? Let count down till the skis never jam up, catch edges or chatter...how we do that is use your turn shape... outside ski... flow through turns like water in a waterslide. Select terrain that induces the feeling Have some fun with it then find a modest challenge where the focus is mandatory and celebrate a glorious finish.

The instructor gets a A for enthusiasm but a D for actually teaching skiing. Nowhere in this monologue is any mention that the skis have edges and that skiing is all about learning how to engage the edges with the snow and control how pressure is applied to them. How can she spend this entire presentation with a student and not notice that he generates most of his turning by rotating his upper body? Less talk and more teaching about how skis actually interact with the snow!

I'm only asking so I can understand. At the beginning of the video, it looks to me like she is initiating the turn with the tips but is not arcing the ski to complete the turn instead she is washing out the tails by sliding, (looks like she is thrusting her hips to pop the tails) almost as if she needs to be a little forward of center balance point to transition for the next turn. Just wanting to know because I feel I do the same thing in bumps I guide the tips into the turn then check speed by sliding the tails to kill speed. The problem then is I feel I am back of center and not pressing forward for the next turn. I would appreciate any input. Thanks and have a great day!!

Can’t disagree. However, at 6, you want to focus on the fun aspect. Be satisfied with small increments of improvement. Deb’s video instruction is very high quality. Even here, where this child is an excellent skier, she is not harping on things that could be made better, but are not part of this particular lesson. The kid gets confidence, and a better platform for continued improvement.

@DebArmstrongSkiStrong

Short radius is a quicker tempo turn than a long radius turn. Longer radius turns are generally made on groomed slopes because longer radius turns generate faster speeds. The body may align differently depending on the situation. Those are a few thoughts.

Nice video Deb!!! Terrific instructions. A question about your Blizzard HRCs. Aren't they slalom skis and aren't slalom skis with narrow waists not supposed to work well in the kind of powder you are skiing in this video? How did you make this work?
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong Жыл бұрын
Yes that ski is narrower under foot making it more difficult in deep snow. I am a skillful skier so I make it work well with very active legs extending, flexing, turning and managing many movements simultaneously. That is what defines elite, skillful skiing.
