I really like the tone of your voice. Clear loud and decisive. The optimal for a ski lesson. Greetings from Greece.

Deb does an outstanding job of breaking it down into small steps, making her student comfortable and confident.. Lots of positive reinforcement and encouragement. I have been in education and coaching for 40 years and appreciate great teaching when I see a lesson like this. I do not know if this lesson is exactly the PSIA approach or the genius of a world class ski coach like Deb Armstrong. It should be a instructor training video. This is definitely how teachers should interact with students.⛷⛷

Tuesday is the ultimate beginner skier. She has great body awareness and learns quickly. If only all beginners were this easy to teach!

I am watching this because I am a snowboard instructor and I will start teaching ski this season. It’s very helpful and it’s similar to the approach I learned at the training except this is much more thorough. I learned so much from Deb both as a student and an instructor. Thank you, Deb!

Great initial use of the hands and getting the student to use the same, to show what the feet and legs are doing. I believe there are powerful neural connections between the upper and lower body halves, so if the student can see and do what they need to with their hands first, there's a better likelihood of success when they go to move feet, ankles, knees etc... on up. Thanks again for producing and posting the gliding wedge segment. Will use this as a resource with my students for sure...

Another year and here I am again visiting Deb's older videos. 1 minute into the lesson, Deb asked the student about the pace and how she liked it. Got a confirmation and moved on. That is subtle but an excellent example of nice ski instructor.

Deb, thank you for these videos. I had my first ever skiing lesson recently and seem to have great difficulty doing an effective wedge. Our instructor rushed through everything and did not effectively cover points such as inner edge grabbing the mountain and shins against boots etc. It seems when I am looking forward rather than down and trying to wedge, it feels like I’m doing it but in the end my ski tips cross and I think after watching your videos, I’m putting too much weight into my heels rather than shin forward that it’s stopping my ski tails from being able to move over the snow. I’ve also never tried grabbing the mountain with my ski edges. Going skiing 2nd time ever on Monday without instruction and am going to try to master the wedge so I can be ready for next Thursday’s instructor led course. I’m doing a 7 week beginner program in a group setting. In hindsight, I think one on one training would have been better. I don’t think I so much as had my boots on properly even as they were heavily compressing my calf so that even standing still was painful. Any tips or pointers before my Monday freestyle escapade would be greatly appreciated. You’re an excellent instructor!

I realize that this an old post and by now you are skiing the blacks, so this comment is more for instructors. I really like the way Deb, in lesson one, spent time making sure the student understands the importance of the edges. I sometimes do an exercise where I have the students, with skis off, and rotate a flat ski over the snow, then tilt it on edge and try the same thing. One other point, I prefer to teach a wedge turn first thing, because I don’t want the student to get locked into the “death pizza” where they are just wedging as hard as they can to try to slow down, and which doesn’t work on steeper terrain. Skip that and go straight to the idea of turning across the hill to slow down.

Really helpful video! I like the way you move through the progression with a lot of positive encouragement! I find when teaching that using poles when starting out can cause a reliance on the poles. Everyone has their own way of teaching though, enjoyed looking at the way you do the progression.

Love to see that I am on the same page with Deb Armstrong with my beginner's lesson. Except I never introduce a bull fighter turn or use of poles in general until a student gets to a parallel skiing. You can see on the video the way the student is holding poles with pole's tips forward while sliding down ready to stop using the poles. It affects the stance as well, with the whole body is moving back.

I recently did an absolute-beginner women’s workshop at Brighton and loved it! I wish I’d seen this series before I started; it’s what I did in my lessons exactly and that preparation would’ve been nice. I did great anyway, and I can’t wait to get back on the mountain to practice!

thanks for the comment. Will keep that in mind. men and women deal with fear of injury or fear from past injury. Empathy, pacing, awareness, proper terrain selection, good people skills with appropriate selection of focus points. Wow, skillful teaching. GOOD LUCK. I am always here for specific questions.

When riding the carpet, it is important to lift your poles when getting off. if they touch the groove at the end of the carpet, the machinery stops and the liftie has to do paperwork on the stop. This is a great series, and I review it before every season of skiing.

@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong I have taken away so many students on snow ski trips,. The girls that dance had better balance as well as body awareness and far more confidence than the greater majority of participants. I learnt to ski in my fifties and did not fall over at all. Several years of barefoot water skiing helped I believe.
