I don’t think people understand the amount of time skilled iron workers take to have these pans casted. Yeti isn’t just producing cast iron pans based on their brand but rather adopting the ideologies of the original founder of ButterPat Industries… Denis Powell. While Lodge is top tier based on price, quality and customer service Yeti aka ButterPat go several steps further. Lodge uses an automated system to make millions of pans a year while Yeti is making no more than hundreds monthly all by hand. And as they mentioned the casting process is a ceramic mold which allows them to make more precise cast iron cookware. Very similar to vintage cookware which can rival Griswold and Wagner. It takes roughly 21 days from pouring the iron to curing and seasoning to produce 1 pan. All by hard working Americans. This is the reasoning behind the PRICE.

@jeffneiman4635Ай бұрын
Yeah it's kind of embarrassing in this context. I can understand Yeti coolers, and Yeti mugs.... but a cast iron, regardless of brand, is a solid hunk of iron that requires a bit of hands on effort and maintenance.... don't sink $300 into a chunk of iron that will cook, and rust, the same as a $25 lodge that will perform (and last) just as long. Unless you think Yeti's will become heirloom pieces....

My cleaning method is to use salt and a rag to scrub stuff loose. Then run it under water with another rag to clean out the rest. Then I put it back on the stove to make sure all the moisture is gone. Not sure if it's the best method, or if I can even recommend it, but it's how I've been doing it for years.

Same here. I throw a little neutral oil on them when it's still hot from drying out. And then, just cause I'm a dork and think it's fun, I scrub them down good and re-season them in the oven once a year or so. Usually when my partner forgets to clean them properly😂

Huge secret, so simple, not huge. Take a rip roaring dirtyAF just cooked in CI pan, and shove it under the hottest water you have, wait 5 minutes, it all comes off with a few swirls of anything even mildly abrasive with little pressure, little, like a scrubby. Immediately pat dry, and you are good to go. No salt, no soap, nothing. Been doing this multiple times a week for decades. It's really simple. Hot pan, hot water, done. It's cast iron, no need to get fancy, like this YETI marketing. Brad, stick to fishing and cooking simply.

Should you season again every time after you clean a pan? I usually clean it, heat it up to dry, put oil on and let it bake in, wipe excess. Is that needed every time?
@blakelanders6966Ай бұрын
You don't need to throw it in the oven after you put oil on it and wipe the excess.
@JesseCohen29 күн бұрын
@Sierubino to clarify your question, let’s separate the terms “cleaning” from “seasoning”, re-seasoning, or “baking in”, as you mention. TLDR: Clean after every use. Re-season only as needed, but deep clean first, using salt paste, or cast iron cleaning product. Season from scratch, only if the seasoning layer is very damaged. For cleaning, scrape out the solids, wash with warm soapy water, towel dry, then warm on a medium-low stove for 3 minutes or so until completely dry. You can check by wiping it all over with a paper towel. If it comes away with a wet spot or two, back to the stove with it. Save the paper towel. While it is just warm, you can add a thin layer of neutral oil (with said paper towel), to protect the seasoned coating. That’s it, you’re done. I do this because I live near the ocean, so more moisture and salt is in the air around my place, and the thin oil barrier protects from most corrosion. Seasoning is a bit different, and isn’t really necessary unless the coating has been damaged. But for newer pans (read: having less seasoned layers overall ) it might also come into play. After the cleaning you just did, if you notice a light patch or two, or just to build up the layers further, for reasons, this is when re-seasoning comes in. Use a paste of oil and sea salt to really ensure a clean inner surface. Rinse with warm water, dry on the stove or in the oven a few moments. After you wipe on a thin layer of neutral, high heat oil (wiping away excess with a fresh towel), get it in the top rack of a preheated dry oven at 425-450 for one hour. Best if it’s upside down, with a drip tray under it on the rack below. After an hour, kill the heat, letting it cool on its own. Repeat this process until you’re happy with the results. Bonus Fact: The myth about soap being unsafe for CI comes from how old soap, especially powdered soap, was formulated. In decades long past, lye (sodium hydroxide) was included, in some amount, in most soap products for home use. These almost always insisted on gloves when handling in the directions. That highly caustic alkali will eat through polymerized oil very quickly (aka. seasoning). In the decades since, “hand safe” soap formulas (containing no lye at all) took over as the standard, with lye now only appearing in some oven, and industrial cleaning products. Good to remember if you’re stripping CI or carbon steel down to bare metal, to truly season from scratch.
@blakelanders696629 күн бұрын
@@JesseCohen I agree with everything you said but I don't see why you would make a salt paste to clean when you point out soap is safe for cast iron.
@JesseCohen29 күн бұрын
@blakelanders6966 It’s a trick I use to deep scrub away caked hard stuff if soap isn’t enough. It doesn’t happen often, but now and then I get lazy after cooking for an evening. You don’t want to soak the pan overnight, or even for very long, nor use abrasive powder or sponges. The salt scrub acts like a gentler abrasive. It’s especially useful at removing flaky seasoning, when a deep clean is required due to damage, prior to rebuilding the layers. Bonus, if I use the seasoning oil in the scrub, I can just wipe away the salt with the excess oil, and throw it straight in the oven. Hope this helps clarify the use case.👍🏻
