You've got to see how we left and realize that this is a disaster for the local people. We could have done this much better and I agree we should not continue to be there and ultimately leave. And this is a failure by the Biden administration to account for the mass human casualties from the US backing out. How is this different from when Obama pulled troops out of Iraq? Terrorists abound and take over. I'm not saying we should stay but we could have left much better.

Two things this expert did not address despite saying Biden did as well as could be expected: 1. Pulling out in the middle of the fighting season versus later in the year. 2. Leaving all the equipment and resources for the enemy. Why was it necessary to leave in such a hurry that billions and billions in elite war fighting equipment fall to the enemy? Why could the US not evacuate on its own terms and timeline to prevent this.

The West had one massive delusion about Afghanistan: They assumed the people hated the Taliban and would greet them as liberators. But that was obviously false, how did the Taliban manage to defeat everyone else by 2001 unless a significant chunk of the Afghan population supported them? How were they able to survive 20 years of guerilla warfare without significant support from the population? It seems a lot of Afghans want to be ruled by radical muslims or are at least okay with the idea. I don't get why, but it seems thats what they want. It's kind of a repeat of Vietnam, the people there seemed (and still seem) to prefer a communist dictatorship over anything the West has to offer.

I call BS on the Kabul airport comment. A near empty Bagrum air base is less than 30 miles from Kabul city center which would be easily defended because the infrastructure is in place. It could have been sectioned for security and house the most venerable allied Afghans. Enough troops and airpower could have secured transfer of our people and our allies IF negotiated secure transfer with the Taliban did not work. Please don't defend that the administration got caught with their pants down on how rapid the Taliban advanced and royalty screwed up the withdrawal. Come on Saager or Krystal a little push back is in order. There was no need to see people hanging desperately on the wheels of US aircraft to get crushed.

@TheDrewSaga This narrative that this "pull out" disaster was inevitable. You realize that you just claimed there wasn't much Biden could do but then immediately say what he could've have done? And also skipped over the things OP suggests what could've been done? Biden's negligence resulted in the worst possible way to handle this thing. And it wasn't Trump's "suggestion" it was part of the deal he set up. Biden messed it up and wanted to push it back to Sept. 11 for his own ego and political purposes to not give Trump any credit and it totally backfired on him.

Update if you look at it right now they are doing what they should had done from the beginning. The only difference is they are doing it at the Kabul Airport directly counter to what the the guest speak said. Negotiated secure transfer with the Taliban and can move 5000 to 11000 out of country every day. Again their was no need to see people flying off a plane and hanging on the the wheels. And what did the President say in his speech. If you mess with this transfer we will crush you.....so their you go reality ended up being exactly what I said. The spin is BS they screwed up.

Today, thousands of people who care are being forced to use Instagram and gofundme to try to save our allies. The embassy had to be evacuated in disarray, and we ended up having to put more troops into Afghanistan to evacuate than were there in the first place (6,000 vs. 2500 a few months ago). (An additional thing that they had much less control of but I wish had been done better was the equipment we left behind. We essentially just made the taliban or whoever they sell everything to a near peer adversary. That issue doesn't have a clear answer though. ) Bottom line, this administration promised that the withdrawal wouldn't be a disaster and it is. Now, they're trying to pretend that it was inevitable. Either they were lying or incompetent then, or they're lying and incompetent now. We made up our minds that the war was lost, but Biden got to pick the time-line and its not bravery to go to camp David to avoid questions. @@KaiserMattTygore927 leave on the original timeline in May not violating the existing deal. Fourish months (Jan-May) is plenty of time to get the affairs in order and have an organized withdrawal. It’s not like the existing military in Afghanistan couldnt have figured it out. Pushing back the withdrawal to 9-11-21 for basically purely optics reasons helped to foster increased tension. To say that a deal brokered by the Trump admin and pushed back by the Biden admin is all Biden’s credit is just kissing ass to the establishment. This would have likely been a disaster regardless, but at least there would be the appearance of the US sticking to its word. For the Biden admin to say the Trump admin “didn’t cooperate” is political gamesmanship at its worst.

They absolutely could have planned the exit better, the exit is what it is, but the plan for exit was horrendous. They could have started removing civilians before announcing troop withdrawal, could have begun removing troops before announcing it, and could have just generally done a lot more to remove people from the embassy in quiet. They also could have gotten military equipment out of Afghanistan. Overall, the strategy for a necessary exit was terrible not because of the Taliban taking over, that was inevitable, but because they vastly underestimated how rapidly the Taliban would regain control and thus were forced to do things like have emergency evacuations and burn government documents in haste.

It had absolutely zero TANGIBLE role in the attack happening. Had the attack been orchestrated a few years later. Most people would have enough sense to know that phone and internet alone can be used to coordinate attacks. I believe what made this Afghanistan disaster unavoidable, had already taken place before 9/11, and the George W. Bush administration should have realized what they were getting into-Especially when already knowing what happened to the Soviets. The US actually had TONS of good will, and were celebrated by the Afghan Mujahideen for helping them during the Soviet invasion. But the US screwed that up, and destroyed the good will by getting involved in the civil war that broke out in the power vacuum of the Soviet withdrawal. The US (not surprisingly) backed the losing side, the Northern Alliance. Had we stayed neutral and allowed the Afghan people self-determination, and did nothing to help any side, we'd have had a chance that the Taliban willing to either, give over, or let us come and take Osama Bin Laden, after his 9/11 attacks. But because the US actively assisted the losing side in the Afghan civil war, the Taliban wasn't going to let getting Bin Laden be easy. Thus the chaos ensued, followed by invasion, with disaster ultimately being the inevitable outcome.

Listen to what the guy is saying. He gave them time, they weren’t serious. They risked lives to try to force the president to stay longer and continue this forever war and continue the gravy train. They delayed Trump, Trump passed the buck, they delayed Biden and Biden agreed and publicly gave an ultimatum. They didn’t listen. I got plenty of problems with Biden but this is courageous, and backlash by people that are falling for the psyop is the reason these people have power over the president. Krystal pointed out the day Trump wanted to leave Afghanistan that the Deep State with their corporate media lackies were creating a narrative about Women’s rights and if you look at Twitter all these so called progressives that wanted to leave Afghanistan are repeating their talking points. Like we give a damn about women’s education in Afghanistan. It’s totally disingenuous and the clearest example of Manufacturing Consent I’m viewing in real time.

We have 45 four-star generals and admirals at any given point in time. Over a few decades there are literally hundreds of them. People (especially journalists) see four stars on a collar and think they're looking at George Patton or Dwight Eisenhower. In reality, these are accomplished middle managers who have functioned well in a politicized bureaucracy, one that does not hire from the outside and which efficiently chases out creative or super-smart people before they make major. If they ever had to fight a real war it would be a disaster far beyond what we've seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
