The Sunken Cathedral by Claude Debussy is based on the old Breton legend of the city of Ys, located on the coast of Brittany, which sank into the sea. Debussy musically depicts the city's cathedral and evokes moods of the legend: you can literally hear the wavy sea, the bells of the rising cathedral, its magnificence and greatness, the powerful organ chords, the final sinking into the sea, and the covered organ melody deeply under water.
In this audio-visual performance, I tried to merge all these elements. My imagery was highly inspired by the works of the famous Impressionistic painters Monet (especially the series of the Rouen Cathedral with layers of color spots envelopping and contouring the cathedral), Van Gogh with its flamboyant colors and flows of thick vibrating brushstrokes, and Cézanne with cubist-like shapes, for example in the passage from about 4:05. The wonderful ruin of the St Andrews Cathedral influenced me as well.
