For everyone wondering why he won when not finishing first in this 1500 metres. This is the last competition in the Decathlon, where they compete in 10 different events. 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 metres, 110 metres hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, 1500 metres. Let me tell you, these guys are the toughest of the tough. Supermen.

this is truly impressive, perhaps the hardest gold medal to achieve in the Olympics, the male Decathlon, that is a feat in itself, but in addition, from a country where the winter sports dominate, and where being a winner is discouraged. Huge congratulations. very impressive. In addition, watch the athletes congratulate and thank each other for the two days of intense effort.

There was some mess during the pole vault. Some aces failed completely, Johannes Erm did it surprisingly weak. Rooth made superb there and it paved the way to gold. The surprise pole vault victory went to Janek Oiglane, who was somewhat a spare member of Estonian team but as a real underdog hit their best, 5th place.

This is decathlon. Decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of 10 track and field events. The 10 events they compete in 2 days are: Day 1 100 metres Long jump Shot put High jump 400 metres Day 2 110 metres hurdles Discus throw Pole vault Javelin throw 1500 metres If you miss in one event, you have no chance (then you get 0 points in that event), so to win or be in the top you need to be good in every event. They use a special point system in each event, and the 1500 m is the last event and they turn the points from the leader to the rest into seconds. Rooth was leading by 2 seconds on Neugebauer and 8 seconds on Victor, so he just had to stay in front of these two. The rest of the field were many point/seconds behind so he had full control of them. He didnt have to win the 1500 m to get his gold cause he had gained enough of points before. He is only 22 and it was a surprise even in Norway that he won. He is a huge talent but an Olympic golf is insane when its the first medal on senior level.
