Hear me out - If I interpret his comment from the principle of relationships and courting, the suggestion of ownership of an individual is not literal, however, it is the position that each other are in a serious relationship to each other ONLY and, therefore responsibilities and commitments to each other. Not that she is his property. You hear it all the time "my man", "my woman", etc. Gen. 2:24 make the illustration - A man shall cleave to HIS wife (or HIS woman). Look at Numb. 5:28-30. With respect to behavior, women know when another woman is making a move on "her" man, and vice versa. Right? Believe it or not there are servers who make subtle flirtatious moves on people. Therefore, his comment is accurate from that perspective. However, the younger set view relationships differently and thus the element of responsibility, loyalty, trust, commitment, and the sense of belonging to each other is almost totally absent. For example, a "strange" attractive woman (and you recognize that she is attractive) casually speaks to a man (who is with his woman, girlfriend, etc.) - what happens next? With all the attitude in her, "Who was THAT?" "Where do you know HER from.", "OH, REALLY?" All of that coming from Ms. "I am my own." Who then gets all of the attitude - HE DOES! If the scene was reversed, the man would have become defensive about another man talking to "his" woman. In essence he is defending, protecting, watching for other males who try to take his female or his woman. That's reality. To the pastor's comment, if I am not mistaken general etiquette and restaurant etiquette assumes and therefore says when a man is present - speak to him. That is also true in some cultures. Pay attention that there are a lot of older people in that congregation and note the response to his comment. He knew what he was saying and to whom he was saying it to. Sorry for the length.
