Yes, they villainised him up after Grant left, I think mainly to make up for the loss of hardman Grant. Phil was lashing out though as his life was wrecked by his family.

@@Uksoapfan it was when Kathy left him that really pushed him over the edge after that he became a totally different person, a bully, dominating the whole square, thug, controlling etc

@@manvirshergill1739 I agree, actor Steve McFadden said this as well, how Kathy and Ben going is what made him a messy state. Also Phil had apologised to Grant endless times and allowed him to put him in hospital over Sharongate yet Grant still destroyed Phil's life out of spite. Also Phil still felt guilt over that 1994 death of the vagrant in the car lot. No wonder he turned so nasty later on.
