There's a well-known poem from Philip Larkin titled "Church Going" in which the narrator laments the loss of churches, imagining that now no one uses them they will become what? who knows? relics, discos? restaurants! At times it seems to me Christmas may be fated similarly and that saddens me. It's a joy seeing you enjoying the Season of Giving, and - of course - welcome home.

Ah - Hans Brinker...a childhood favourite that I return to every five years or so, when I want some very sentimental but also very cosy winter vibes. Very old fashioned, but charming. Other winter reads for me, that I return to again and again, are parts of - and all of some of - the "Little House" books, especially The Long Winter. And starting on Christmas Eve every year I read A Christmas Carol aloud - hamming it up with voices and everything, and crying buckets! It's my favourite Christmas tradition (depending on the state of my voice it can take a couple of days or a week - but I always finish on New Years Eve at the latest). 🎄👻
@pittosia3 күн бұрын
Ohh your recommendations are sooo similar to mine! For 2 years I have the "tradition" to read each December only one book from Katherine Arden trilogy... and this year there is the last one, waiting for me, WInter of the Witch. I absolutely adore these books! BTW one recommendation from me- this year I have discovered "The Haunting Season: Ghostly Tales for Long Winter Nights" - short, a bit spooky novels by 8 contemporary autors, which have vibes of Edgar Allan Poe, that was amazing! Love and thanks for a great video! Julia

I’m currently reading Little Women and the Nutcracker and i’m having a wonderful time 🛷🧦 my next reads are Beartown (really excited to read this one), the Winter Spirits (an anthology of winter gothic shortstories) and of course the Winter of the Witch ! I'm so glad you liked the Bear and the Nightingale. I read it over Christmas last year and I remember reading it at every break during family dinners because I was so enchanted by Katherine Arden's writing! The Girl in the Tower is my favorite so far, as I found it explores the full potential of Vasya's character, making it an even more gripping read!

Also loved Piranesi and look forward to picking up your recommendation. Thanks!

I realized this year that, although I've read quite a few different adaptations, I've never read THE Nutcracker. I have a copy at home, so I should read it this year.
@aquaviolin074 күн бұрын
I highly recommend Dumas’ version of The Nutcracker. I read both his version and Hoffman’s version for the first time two years ago, and preferred the former. I did not like Piranesi. Derek Owusu’s That Reminds Me does it so much better. You've inspired me to get back to O'Henry. As for winter book recommendations, I have Doctor Zhivago and Bulgakov's The White Guard on my winter TBR list. Perhaps you would like Jeanette Winterson's Christmas Days: 12 Stories and 12 Feasts for 12 Days. I love Sholeh Wolpe's translation of Sin: Selected Poems of Forugh Farrokhzad, which has some winter poems in it. It's not enchanting, and it's dark sometimes, but the writing is gorgeous.

I have just finished Benfactress by Elizabeth von Arnim. But a book that I finished in November was Snow is falling by Sarah Bennett. It was a amazing read, I believed I read it in about three days. The book touches on family roots, coming home, family relations between generations and finding love at a older age. I could not put it down. I read it on kindle and asked for the physical version for Christmas. I love watching your videos just before bed, a amazing to relax before going to sleep. I hope that the weather is good where you are and staying safe, as in yorkshire, we are having really bad weather to the point of having powercuts, winds uprooting trees and the rain coming into people's houses. ❤❤

I absolutely looove The Bear and the Nightingale, but the sequel is actually my favourite! That said, I hope you can read some Ukrainian literature too! I highly recommend Andrey Khurkov for example, and I think you would enjoy his book Death and the Penguin! Lots of wintery vibes there too, it's about a man who adopts a penguin and has to take care of a little girl while also being a writer ❤ Especially important in these times to support Ukraine in every way we can, or at least add that you don't support Russia of today although you are fascinated by its past. I know this channel is not about politics, but what Russia is doing right now is too horrible to ignore and I don't want you to accidentally promote them, because I really love your channel and your content ❤
