I've said it once in the Nostalgia Critic review (coincidentally also uploaded in the same day), and I'll say it again; This movie suffers the same problems as the Max Payne movie. It's based on source material that had potential to make awesome adaptations, but is squandered by having a toned-down PG-13 and depressing tone that isn't very fun to watch. Granted, it's not as bad as that trainwreck but it seriously pales in comparison to the original. It does have a few decent action scenes, but it could've been so much better than it is. I really wanted to like this movie...
@CodGodess5 жыл бұрын
Matthew Cool very true
@Shadowyn7174 жыл бұрын
The Max Payne movie was at least, in my view, visually interesting to look at (even if it made zero bloody sense). I would actually class this Robo-remake as the lesser film. But you are absolutely spot-on regarding how potentially great this could have been considering the awesome source material. Unfortunately, this toning-down trend shows no signs of stopping. I think the worst recent example was The Meg: that film had so much potential to be a gruesome, schlock-filled, R-rated shark horror/thriller, just like the source novel, but was rendered completely toothless (I know, I'm sorry!) to obtain that all-important PG-13 rating. For God's sake, Jaws was more violent and gruesome over 40 bloody years ago!

Fun and amusing fact that I learned about Robocop 2014. You know it's weird that he still has one of his hands, well this is because they goofed when making the Robocop suit and the gun. When they got the suit and gun back from manufacturing the finger of the suit wouldn't fit inside the guns trigger guard. So they just removed the glove from the suit so it could fit. The original idea was for Robocop to have full body prosthesis like in the original movie.
@kyleabbott71915 жыл бұрын
Neil Price That is a crazy fact but not surprising. Lazy writing, lazy cinematography, lazy effects. Fuck I miss 80s action flicks
@TheMichaelStott5 жыл бұрын
That could be true. But the original Robocop "construction scene" one of the doctors said "We were able to save the left arm" to which Morton said they wanted full robotics which makes sense if your only after a human brain their creation wouldn't mistake innocent civilians for threats and start shooting them up like the failed ED209. In the original Robocop timeline, they needed a human because they hadn't perfected AI. In the new Robocop timeline OCP already had functional AI. That was the argument with Robo's slow performance against the AI robot. the robots were faster and could distinguish threats, they just blasted threats (kid brought a knife to an ED209 fight) OCP couldn't get their AI robots in the U.S the government in this timeline was much less corrupt; senators couldn't risk going against public opinion. Hence Robocop needed to at least look more human so OCP could get around the Bill. They may well of had the issue with the gun and glove with the 2014 version but Peter Weller's gloves in his suit were rubber and new materials we have today are thinner and easier to fabricate You would think if your story is true (which it may well be) like many suit fabricators of this time they could of fixed it within a shorter time than what it would of taken in the Original movies production days.
@Khenfu_Cake5 жыл бұрын
And here I thought they were being somewhat clever by referencing the "we managed to save his arm" bit from the original film. But apparently not. Man, this film was lazy..

Why people keep thinking the reason for robocop failure is cuz of the violence I could watch robocop 1987 or any movie cuz of the pace of the movie , these directors now pay to much attention to unnecessary detail , robocop 1987 had great scenes and the right music to make it more epic , and to be honest if robocop didn’t had that awesome theme I wanna ouldnt like it so much , I mean he is driving his car and them theme playing I could watch him drive for ours , 2014 they tried to recreate the factory scene without the music lol unbelievable, the only time I enjoyed robocop shooting lots of people is just cuz of the theme , when robocop jumped on canes back in robocop 2 it came out flat , something was missing I know what the epic theme
@davon3283able4 жыл бұрын
So hear what I have to tell directors if y wanna do n awesome movie like robocop , get an epic theme and use it as much as possible through out the movie , cuz music brings out the best of human emotions , people love the rock more cuz of his theme , people love stone cold more cuz of his theme , ultimate warrior, power rangers , super man air wolf knight rider , so that’s what these directors keep getting wrong , get an awesome theme and try your best to crest moments to use the theme as much as possible, I mean when robocop was walking out of the gas station ⛽️ through the fire with that theme just look how epic it was , people love robocop way more than terminator because the music is better , u get emotionally attached to the scenes and until these new directors don’t get that they will try to reboot masterpieces and fail , if they simply just knew this simple fundamentals they will not need to reboot but great lots of new movies n new ideas 💡 that people can love even more than robocop cuz of the advance technology they have , but sadly not so
@davon3283able4 жыл бұрын
So all these robocop movies try to recreate the visuals not saying it’s a bad idea , but what they should really try is to recreate the pacing of the musical choices cuz someone could go to an opera and listen to robocop original without the words , and still find it entertaining but most movies of today u can listen to it , all the music is out of place so now when u watch yeah the cgi looks cool but the music is outa place therefore u will not fully be immersed into the experience, when I was a kid watching robocop I couldn’t tell it had satire , I didn’t even even liked the news scenes I got to appreciate it as an adult , all I loved as a kid was just seeing robocop in all his glory with that epic theme so hopefully some young director understand this if a movie has boring music for two hrs it will not make it just like a party if the dj sucks the party sucks , when we go to a cinema it’s a visual party , if the music sucks then the movie sucks simple

My biggest issue with this movie is the parts where they're making robocop. He's actually performing exactly as he should be in the scenario given to him of being a cyborg cop but theyre judging him by the wrong standard. He's not a robot so he shouldn't be blindly charging around corners and his job is to arrest the criminals not kill them straight away. He isn't expendable like the bots are meant to be in place of humans because he is human and would be hard to replace, and he is there to enforce the law which means he isn't judge jury and executioner so killing them shouldnot be his main objective. In that scenario the robot would have been the loser not murphy because of this. Hell in a future that's probably even more connected it would be important to keep him in line with protocols. Look at what happens now when cops fuck up and imagine how much worse it would backfire on ocp considering his existence is already barely legal.

I went to watch this in the cinema when it came out here in the UK... I, was, BORED!! So bored I almost fell asleep, three times, only managing to stay awake because some loud noise occurred! Something I noticed about this movie, is that next to nobody gets killed on screen, they either fall out of shot, or dust gets blown up around them obscuring them from view, or the explosion that wounds Alex, the flames engulf him so we don't see him get hurt. If you watch the kids at the beginning getting shot at in slow-mo, you'll see that absolutely none of the rounds actually hit him, merely dust flies up and the camera gets turned away! Even for a PG-13, this is weak, in Man of Steel we get to see one of the fighter jet pilots getting splatted into a gory mess, yet here, we seldom get a few drops of blood! They couldn't even get the DVD/Blu-Ray cover's right! In one, he's holding up the original Auto-9 gun, in the other where he's on the bike, he's holding the gun 'backwards'! From the film to the promotional material, it's just one big fuster cluk of a production!

Bounce tube pilot (think of the ballistic shuttles that Elon Musk is talking about, same thing, but written probably before Musk was born...same with the "hyperloop"... ) was talking about fighting robotic pilots. He agreed that in most all situations a robot would be better, but he also said the one thing the robot wont do is keep trying, if the logic says it's not possible it's likely just going to kernel panic and become a paper weight.

9:40 A reviewer who is also a gun nerd. No wonder I subscribed to you. I have similar problems with the ammo capacity of many sci-fi guns. The 100 rounds (though they load 99 a bit like Bren was usually loaded to 28 instead of full 30 and Stg 44 was to 25 according to Larry Vickers) of 10mm caseless in pulse rifles in Aliens, to 50 capacity of 9mm in RoboCop's gun in the original (they don't say it in the movie but that's what it apparently is). And the 60 capacity of 7.62 in Halo Combat Evolved for the main assault rifle. I love the look of each weapon but in my head canon I imagine a more realistic capacity or bigger magazines. I haven't actually yet watched your reviews of RoboCop and Aliens so I don't know if you bring up these things. Also, as Film Brain (or Brian Flim as Diamanda jokingly calls him) pointed out, this version looked better before they made him all black. And I usually prefer things all black.

Nice note at the end. And people complained that RoboCop in the original film was having problems when being barraged by assault rifles, (after taking a load of damage from ED209) Ironically ignoring the fact that it pretty clear that few if any of the AR ammo was penetrating and was the kinetic impact on a already compromised system & that he survived and was more or less fully function after doing some minor self repair while in hiding.

Saw this movie when it was out in theaters. As a big robocop fan, I was disappointed by the pg13 treatment and political satire that wasn't as funny as the original's. That being said, it wasn't horrible either. The action sequences were good, the acting was average to above average, and the plot was alright. It's a shame the hyperviolence of the 80s isn't as popular nowadays. If this remake had more blood squibs and silliness, it probably would have garnered more attention.

I'll probably check it out eventually. It already seems like it'll fall into the category that most "reboots" do: interesting new ideas and takes on stuff from the original, with varying levels of quality in their execution. Has Decker reviewed the 2012 Total Recall?

And with that, the Robocop saga has been closed. Well... According to Wikipedia, it reads, and I quote: "On September 11, 2015, Den of Geek reported that Sony was working on a sequel. However in July 2018, it was announced the series would again be rebooted with a film directed by Neill Blomkamp, titled RoboCop Returns, which will serve as a sequel to Verhoeven's original film and ignore the events of previous sequels and the 2014 reboot." So I guess we'll "look forward" to that. Anyway, thanks for reviewing all 4 films.

To me, why this 'remake' doesn't work is for several reasons. First, the pacing. The 1987 version was all about timing: the storyline, the editing, the dialog. Most of the characters had memorable lines that didn't surrender to cliche. It was a successful mix of science fiction, dystopian fiction, action, horror, comedy, social commentary and satire. Thinking about it (in comparison to the 2014 version), the people watching the original version were more of flies on the wall. The viewer was let in on what was happening, but wasn't spoonfed information like in the 2014 version. Major differences: the chief of police in the original was not in on the OCP projects, like the remake. His job was on the line. The cops were not into OCP at all, since their jobs were threatened (therefore threatening a strike). Cops (in the world of Edward Neumeier, etc.) actually understood they were expendable. The storyline of Murphy's wife consenting to his being a cyborg i know was discussed in the sequels, but the narrative of the original was much more compelling. Him coming back as a cyborg and trying to be a husband and father was trash. In the original story his wife moved on with her life. The storyline of ED 209 and gentrification/'urban pacification' was also missing in effective ways. The only thing that made sense in the 2014 version is that they originally wanted to use ED 209 ultimately for military strategy. It was smart writing to have ED 209 consistently fail in every single scene... The big bully gets felled by stairs. Oh yeah... The voice: The thing that made the original compelling was that Murphy was totally expendable to OCP then dehumanized by making him into a cyborg. The perspective from his view showed how detached he was from everything, from his 'birth' to the battle with ED 209 and Dick Jones. The lack of emotion and robotic tone in his voice (save for a few moments when he began to find his humanity) made this clear. Even Weller's Murphy had memorable one-liners that did not carry over in the 2014 version. Weller was also athletic, and was able to get the effectiveness of the cyborg effect by studying mime, etc. He wasn't just a 'man in a suit' like with the later version. How they did 'Directive 4' in the later version was also trash. The 2014 version's version of satire (if you can call it that) failed for taking itself too seriously. The original was a stab at popular culture itself, and how violence, poverty and war are seen as entertainment, through commercials and quick news clips with a smile. The news source in the movie was unnamed, but had direct references (i mean, one of the hosts was Leeza Gibbons!!!). The news source parodied in the 2014 version (i refuse to unironically call it a remake) was only one. And the parody was without any kind of sharp dialog. On it's own the movie would have made an okay (not great) action movie. But to take the RoboCop concept and create a storyline around it without any of the self-reflection, humor and analysis the original movie did amazing well at... Well it's just plain disrespectful.

In the world of large guns that are typically over 12.7mm (.50 calibur), caliber is also used as a barrel length. It measures the length of the barrel divided by the bore diameter.

It should be noted Jackson's character is supposed to be Bill Reilly and the robots in the other nation a occupying force back a little before the movie came out there was talk about how what we did in middle east nations that we occupy. It should be also noted that studio got in the way of the director. This version was just like the original in that it;s taken on things that are happening at the time of the movie being made.

there are only 2 Robocop movies in my eyes. The last 2 didnt need to, nor should they have been made WITHOUT Peter Weller. The worst part of this one was the quick death of alex Murphy, without having the torture and feeling involved created by Paul Verehoven.
