Your room is a dream Cori, but I know you have built up your shelves and storage over many years of DIY and yard sales etc to gather your wonderful set up. I really love your idea of keeping things to hand so you can keep your work surface clear. I have sort of come to a similar system having set up a small corner for crafting in a bureau in my living room with a trolley with 20 shallow drawers to one side. Working only on a small bureau flap little bigger than my TH glass mat means I do have to try to be tidier. It doesn't always work as well as you. One of the best set ups I had was having a shallow shelf under my main desk, again another small space which was basically a piece of chipboard covered in leatherette laid across two plastic drawer towers. My husband devised a way of have a lower shelf with spacers, I think I may have seen something similar in Jennifer Maguire's craft room and it was the best thing for keeping paper trimmers, stamp presses and score boards to hand but out of the way.
@CoriDahmenАй бұрын
Thank you Elaine and YES! I created a pull out flat shelf when we first moved in here, when my craft room was the cave. Long, flat-ish but absolutely essential items can be a challenge. Jennifer McGuire is as incredibly kind as she is talented and we all benefit from her shard ideas and skills. Happy creating to you in 2025!

Great advice Cori! We rebuilt our home about 18 years ago and I used this method to design my kitchen. I spent countless hours drawing options on graph paper until I got a space that works for what I have and how I cook. I think there aren't that many makers who spend that kind of time designing our craft spaces (me included). And for many of us, the way we create has shifted as our crafts evolve and/or change, so this reassessment becomes an iterative process.

Your advice actually follows the basic principles that Dana lays out. It struck me watching you that her main question, "Where would I look for this first?" actually can apply to when you are sitting there crafting and where you would reach out for a tool or supply is likely the best place to keep it. Her 'take it there now' rule fits right in with you putting your tools back as soon as you are finished with it. She also teaches the 'container concept' in that a container actually contains and sets the limits on how much you can put in the space and comfortably use. Having limited space right around us as we are crafting, it makes sense to have our most used and needed items in that space. I'm really enjoying this collaboration!! 💕

I love seeing your craft room Cori. I cannot believe how beautifully it all sits together. One day my kids will get mine finished so I can use it in the wheelchair. At the moment they seem to just be moving stuff from one space to another and mixing stuff together whereas I could have told anyone before exactly where every item was and where they could find it down to the last brad, or coloured scrap of paper. Not anymore. I can point to larger tubs with material but not to individual stamps or dies. But they promise by the next school holidays over here they will have it done so I can at least get in there and point to where I want stuff put so I can access easily what I want to use often. Also will be culling LOTS of stuff that is not feasible to keep anymore which is sad but hopefully someone else can get some joy from them. Enjoyed this video. Thanks Cori. ❤

I love your room the old items being repurposed the baking trays and gorgeous sewing machine drawers, I have a few in the shed I must get them into my craft room. Unfortunately my muffin tray was way to large for my work area it was more in the way I have a set of old pigeon holes in front of me and I need trays to pull in and out of. But every hole is different so I think I'll build my own from decorated cardboard like Ceri the Crafters boxes which I've done.a large one before. I have a 3 tiered lazy susan for pens, rulers, glues, scissors, awl, brushes etc within reach on my desk and everything goes back in it's spot. It looks cluttered but it's organised and since I put a cube shelf right behind my chair and I'm still move things around to get it just right with the things I need within reach but the loose paper is a nightmare but a work in progress I'll get there. Thank you for the look around I think all of us would happily have your room in our houses.

Great organization having everything at hand. I’m the type of bug though that likes to have things hidden away, so I make it harder for myself because I don’t like to see things out. It’s visual clutter to me. I do have a caddy on my desk with pens and pencils and scissors and bone folder and all that and I have a rolling cart behind me that I can just roll up next to me but most of the time I just end up spinning around and grabbing what I need. Where I’m situated also with my desk in the middle of the room when you walk into the room you don’t see that cart unless you walk in and turn around so I’m OK with it showing, we have to organize for our own style. I love watching Dana K White. I don’t think I would know these videos were going on if I hadn’t seen it on her channel. Of course, she’s not an organizer, she’s a decluttered. She always says you can’t organize clutter. I love her no mess decluttering method. I can’t do the Marie Kondo type of thing where you take everything out, that would just overwhelm me and I wouldn’t get it done. With her no mess method if you have to stop at any time, you don’t leave a mess.
@CoriDahmenАй бұрын
All great points and that is one of the benefits of Dana's system... there is a tip and style that will work for everyone, no matter their organizing or crafting preferences 😊
@TraceyFJStudioАй бұрын
You made some very good points. I'm currently setting up my new craft room from scratch and I've been trying to balance "how I work" with "where things fit". You've overcome that issue beautifully by making your own shelving nooks for specific items and I love the result. I'm going to let my space evolve as I find suitable second-hand storage pieces. One of the key things for me is to keep it simple. I've seen people organising their craft materials into overly complicated folder or envelope systems that would take so much time and effort to put things away that I know I wouldn't do it. I also have placed my desk protruding into the room because I felt like I was wasting so much space in the middle of the room. Thanks for the tips! 😊

I love your craft room. It is exactly aesthetically my taste. I could work in this room easily. Love how you have it set up. I will definitely refer to this when I set up my craft room.

WOW……this video is what I woke up to this morning! It’s just what my Saturday needed! A practical and efficient work space equals inspiration and creating easier. The first thing I would like to do for my space is make a raised shelf. I can see how that helps with the desk organization. Also, I’ve been trying to find better lighting ideas, where did you get your two lamps? Thank you for sharing, love your ideas, they all make sense and I’ll be working in my craft room today with some new plans!

Excellent! Truly, the simple desk shelf was a game changer. If you're not interested in making one, I find that over-the-sink-organizer shelves often work well. The two OTT lights are from Costco, and fairly recent purchases (within the last few months). Happy organizing to you!

Cori thank you so much for sharing your tips. I love your craft room! I have collected quite a few enamel ware pieces this summer, just need to organize things so they are available at arms reach. I will have to watch this series for sure.

Thank you, Nancy and it's fun to find and collective those, isn't it? I hope you enjoy using them in your craft room 😊

@@CoriDahmen I get so excited when I see one, I have a really small one with a lid that I just love. I currently have small vellum stickers in it, but that might change. Hope to find another some day😊

Hi Cori Happy New Year. Your suggestions are wonderful.....I need shelving that will work for my stuff. I am not a builder (small condo in Florida) but maybe I can find the precut furniture or some wonderful antique furniture ( it is always small and compacted. I do like your tins for containers.....clean look. Thank You and look forward to your next video . I make kits for my new journals...Any Way to organize and keep neat? Hugs Kat
@CoriDahmenАй бұрын
Hi Kat and yes! I have a system for storing kits that works for me, using zippered bags. Perhaps something like that will work for you!

I love your space and I believe I've watched organizing videos on your channel before, but your method honestly doesn't work for me at my current state, in my already cluttered, disorganized space. Dana White's decluttering method doesn't require any pre-planning, and it doesn't ask "why" because that's a hindrance to decluttering. Using her method, the first three steps get things that don't belong out of the space super quickly, and for everything that does belong in the craft room, I ask "where would I look for this first" and then I "take it there now." Huge progress toward a usable space without the mental effort of deciding how to organize. Maybe in a future world when I have a less cluttered room, I'll watch again and find your approach to organizational systems more approachable. 😅Thanks for the video!

Thank you for sharing your experience and I'm happy to hear that you've found a system that works well for you, as that is the ultimate win. Best wishes as you reclaim your space and enjoy creating in it 😊

I've used Covey's "begin with the end in mind" since I read it last century. I organise like you in that I have my workspace with items I use at hand and return them to their containers rather than leaver on my workspace. I didn't always do that but I have for a very long time now. great video Anne, Australia🦘
