Be careful with bungee cords especially at eye level. They could cause serious injury. My husband suggested using 1x3 or 1x4 4 foot long wood slats to create a lip to keep jars on the shelves. I have keep ALL of my jars ( several hundred) in the original boxes on the shelves-full ones and empty ones. Flats from Sam’s or Costco would also work. I’ve heard that you should put a layer of thin wood between jars if double stacking. I’m 68 and have been canning for 40 years. I’m going to try making that grape juice. What steamer would you recommend? We have a ton of muscadines each fall.

I do love it. www.harvestessentials.com/victorio-vkp1150-deluxe-stainless-steel-steam-juicer.html I like having a glass lid so I can see how the grapes are looking. Good luck! I’ve never heard of those grapes. They sound yummy!

The problem with putting the jars in the boxes that they came in, is that cardboard can attract pests by providing them a home to hide in and in some cases they actually feed on the cardboard. For that reason I never store anything cardboard in my pantry. If I need to double stack jars I will use thin pieces of Luan (a thing type of wood) to place between the first and second layers of jars. If you choose to leave your rings on they should be taken off after your jars have cooled so that the jars and especially the threads can be washed as well as the rings. Once dry you can put them back on the jar - loosely . That way the ring can support and distribute the weight of the jars above, but won't form a "false seal" if a lid should come loose. Stacking the regular mouth pint on top of the wide mouth puts all the wieght directly on the lid rather than the ring. The "milk jug" type of container that has water in it is not meant for long-term storage, that type of plastice will eventually leak. The pasta will keep longer if kept in a dark airtight container (you can still leave them in their original package if you'd like to). We realized that if our shelves weren't attached to the wall then bungees or any other restraints wouldn't save our har work in an earthquake. We feel much better now that they are bolted to the wall.

I see you have the rings on many of your jars. These are supposed to be removed after canning so that you can tell if the jar becomes unsealed. These are great ideas for safe-guarding your home canned goods. I actually keep my boxes and put the canned goods back in the boxes to keep them safe.

The pantry looks great. Your shelves are metal so keeping the goods secure is easy. Some suggestions: 1. Buy wire baskets to put jars in. Then put the bungee cords around each shelf. The wire baskets would be a bit of an investment, but would be the safest and most long-lasting. Use only for the jars. 2. Buy a sheet of wire cloth (hard to describe-please Google it). It can be cut to size. Have wire cloth welded just on the sides and use the bungee cords on the front. 3. Buy thin metal flat bars of a 1" to 2"-they can be cut to the needed length. Have two welded on each side of the shelf. Again, use bungee cords on the front.

You might be able to stick a wooden dowel rod to protect the cans. Bungee does not seem secure. And, I would imagine that it could weaken over time and become a slingshot, that’s just where my mind goes. Likelihood or not, I’d go with a non stretchy hard material like wood 1x2’s or something.

I place a whole bag of flour in a 5 gallon bucket in it's orginal packaging(flour bag is not air tight). I place a 3000cc oxygen absorber in the bucket, cover it then use my vaccum sealer to seal the bucket. Yes, you can actually do that! Check KZbin for tutorial) I also put a bay leaf inside the bucket to deter bugs. I use food grade buckets that I can buy used for $3 cdn with the lids. I just bought 25 buckets for $75 cdn.

If the bungee cords are too loose, just make a knot or two in each bungee cord, and that'll shorten it. Or tying rope around the shelves could work, too. I benefit from hearing your thought process as you go. That's helpful. You are a big time canner. Impressive. I've never canned a thing.

I'm taking a break from my organization and going back down to the basement to tackle that job. I can only handle doing that in small increments at a time. Watching You tube gives me a break and I learn ideas from how others do it. Right now we have a lot of empty jars and I was thinking about filling them with water too. Wondering if I need to can the water and boil it? I was also thinking about putting milk in the empty jars and freezing it that way. Has anybody done that?
@reallifewithali
@reallifewithali 11 ай бұрын
I found this resource about storing water. It looks like as long as your jars are sterilized first, it isn’t a problem. I read another article that said to switch the water out every 6 months. It would last a lot longer if you use a water bath to can them. As for the milk, I read differing opinions. One said to never use glass jars to freeze milk and another said it’s okay if the jars are freezer safe and you leave plenty of room for expansion. I hope this helps!

Every time I have an empty spot in my canner I fill a jar with water and add that to the load (pints and quarts). It's the only time I use used lids (in good shape). If one doesn't seal, it didn't cost anything. The result is sterile water which comes in handy for wound washing and other hygiene uses, as well as it lasts longer than just storing water in unsealed jars, so it lasts quite awhile for drinking. Label and date just as you would canned food. After all it takes no more room to store a full jar than an empty one.

I try to stock up on foods and supplies in case of an emergency where we don’t have access to a grocery store. It is also cost saving. I can buy things on sale in larger quantities to store. I just have to remember to keep rotating the food!
@gailoreilly1516

Hello, you asked if we store because of weather or cost saving. I would say both. We have some wicked weather here in all areas of the country. I am in the north (New York State). So, snow is an issue. Right now, our prices are going up weekly. Some of that is due to bad weather last year causing bad yields on food, some political, some greed. Probably a few more reasons also but the bottom line is, food costs, mechanical parts, medicines are getting very expensive, some cannot be found or there is a multiple week wait for them to come in. There is also an under lying fear of being attacked ie power grid, computers, virus etc. or just having buildings blown up the way they were on 911. Personally, I feel an uneasiness that is increasing because of the thousands and thousands of illegals coming here that no one can vet. We now have a measles outbreak. We haven't had measles here in years. There is more but it gets depressing to talk about. Good luck to you. Put a few cans away every week....just in case.
