Why not have Scott go through his books too? Or buy a bookcase to replace that one with one more shelf then you have two shelves each. It wouldn’t take up more floor room just a little more height.

While you should not declutter someone else stuff, you can ask them to go thru their stuff when they get a chance. If they go thru and keep everything then that is totally fine. But I can guarantee you that their are at least a handful of books that Scott no lo ger wants.

Those tall white bookcases - you bought 8 years ago from Target. They were the Room Essentials brand for less than $30 each. You chose these because they had 2 taller shelves for your bigger books. About kid and baby books. Sure there are certain books that we might just Keep for a future generation ( like if you have the complete Harry Potter series), but for smaller quickread baby and kid books, the kids got to choose a couple of favourite, and they went into their memory box. I also have a memory box so if there is something like a baby shorts or a book that I love, I can Keep it there. And we Keep the boxes fairly small. Like if the kids want to Keep all the stuff from their 1st grade - ok for now, because when the box gets full 5 years later, they only remember 5% of the first grade stuff, and so they free up space for new things in the box.

Another solution could be that your absolute favourite from different ages or themes can get a small shelf in the livingroom or another room that the family use together, so that they are a nice reminder - like hanging a photograph.

I know this is hard for you and having watched you over the last few years I can see how much progress you have made. You're definitely on the right path for your life, and you will be better off without all those things that could hold you back!

I’m not surprised Sophia! It’s a process! I think it’s partly the more you declutter the more you willing to let go and an age thing and age just makes you want to let go of more. That’s what’s been happening with me lately and my sister and my cousins that are my age. Stuff I’ve gone through already I’m going through again and getting rid of it. Soon I will be getting rid of a lot of seasonal stuff. Not as much fun to put out when you don’t have kids at home or grand kids etc. I’m done with it….. well almost. Kudos! 💜👍💜👍💜

I feel like by letting go of the "not quite what I want, but close enough" items that I own, I end up creating the opportunity to get *exactly* what I was really wanting. I've stopped buying "this will do for now" stuff and just hold out for the perfect one. Sometimes I find that I don't even want it anymore. I do wonder why you keep your books in the basement. I know that you had them in the office forever ago, and that seemed more practical and looked better there as well, but those are just my feelings on it. Your house, your rules!

These books were always in the basement. It was the to be read and the etiquette books that were in the office and those are here because , well, there is nowhere else to put them.

Would all the books left in the basement now fit upstairs in the office? Makes more sense to have them together and closer to where you want to read them. If you read in the basement, then it does make sense to have them there, but if you read upstairs, it would make more sense to take them up a few floors. You have cleared quite a few shelves in the office.

HI Sophia! I am so proud of you. Decluttering books is so difficult and I absolutely love that you don't declutter anyone's stuff. My dad did that to me repeatedly. He got rid of my piano because only my mom and I played. And he got rid of three of my dogs, a black Labrador, a collie, and a poodle. Not sure why, they never messed in the house or anything. This is why I have a huge problem with decluttering. I am still trying to process the problems even after all this time.

I am sorry you had such a bad experience with others deckuttering things that were dear to your I am sure it left a bitter taste and you have a different relationship with objects as a result. I totally get it. That being said, how about we regain control and actually chose what we have in our home, keeping what we want to keep and letting go of the frivolous and non important accumulation. Surely it would empower you to be able to say "I am in charge here, moving forward, I decide what stays and what goes!" Keep me posted.

Hey Sophia, you did an excellent job narrowing down the books you wanted to keep. I was left wondering if you’re going to ask Scott if there are any books he would like to declutter from his stack in the bookshelf? Anyway, I love that you kept only the books that are really useful, sentimental or the ones you know you’ll browse through again. Perhaps you should consider moving the small bookcase over to where the tall bookcase was and put your curio cabinet by the stairs. This is because it looks like there is better light over by the stairs. Also, it means your new cabinet (which will probably have glass doors) will be out of the way of the door through to your heating and diy room, from which you carry lots of heavy items that if dropped could knock or scratch your curio case.

You’ve encouraged me to declutter a few books. The last few diy projects I’ve had my go to was KZbin,not my big fat diy handbook, so that book can definitely go. Also many of my recipe books I haven’t opened for years- again I tend to turn to the internet . I’m finding children’s books hard though as I don’t have grandchildren yet but I’m hopeful I’ll have some one day.

When you are looking at L shaped sofas they make some that are apartment size so they fit closer to the wall. I didn't know this until my husbands aunt had bought one for her house. She lives in an older home and she has very small rooms. Just another option. Have a great day!

@@mygreatchallenge I love my sectional from Haverty’s ( yeah kinda expensive but worth it) it the “Corey” sectional. It comes in different configuration. It holds up nicely and it’s not bulky. My niece has had hers for 13 years and structure is still holding up. Cushions not so much but she has six kids she has washed the covers many many times. I had the small couch with a “cuddler” at the end in our previous house. It also comes with a chaise. Loved it but sold it when we moved. My current couch is same thing just a L shaped sectional.

I understamd not decluttering others possessions, but couldn't some of Scott's books go into storage in the attic? That way when Scott is ready to declutter the books they are close by and he can really mull it over? Only keep ones for display that are a possible read. Just a thought.
