Decluttering and Cleaning the HUGE Engine Room of our Historic Trawler

Our next big project is the engine room of our 73 year old sailing boat. This time we get rid of the heavy broken diesel heater. Lifting it up on deck was quite a challenge!
And we wash the engine room of our 82ft Trawler for the first time in 30 years.
Over the next weeks we are continue to clean up the engine room and overhaul the main engine and the generator.
Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was. When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean together with you and teach traditional sailing skills.

Dear Barbara and Daniēl, Getting rid of not working or unnecessary equipment out of the engine room and after a thoroughly cleaning the engine room looks so much better. Willeke and I advice you to paint the whole engine room in off white to offer you in the future a more pleasant environment to work in the engine room. The white should also be in the complete bulge and under the engine so you’ll notice any leak in the future right away. We wish you lots of success with the rest of the refit of this historical tall ship and sen you love

BTW Bud, you don't need a respirator when using a pressure washer. You need degreaser to spray on an engine and an engine room then pressure washer. That will work much better for ya.

I know it looks a bit silly but especially in the engine room you never know what materials were used. A pressure washer can create an airflow and disperse dust. So a bit overcautious I know but also asbestosis is a thing. What's the downside of wearing a respirator...

I agree with you. A clean engine room is a pleasant place to work in. No good can come from floors and fixtures preserved in grease if you're constantly running the risk of falling down. And nobody enjoys being covered in oily muck just because you've been working near an engine.

In my opinion, creating a clean engine room, and painting it white, will achieve a very clear room, and you will be able to quickly observe any fluid loss.

Barbara , I worked as a Safety officer on large construction jobs . We always had a safety plan for every activity AHA : Activity Hazard analysis . Sounds so simple but very important and insured everyone went home in one piece . Great effort once again the engine room it's really coming together . Well Done !

Second suggestion - use a wire wheel on the pipe ends to get rid of the corrosion build-up before you put on new rubber hoses. I’ve been working on engines for 45 years and have learned a few things. Overall, you both are doing great!! Very happy for you both

You did realise that the 'plates' of the boiler can be separated by cutting the long studs that clamp them together. 7:47 Barbara is rigging the strop around the top two. Not that it matters as you've got it out now. 🙂

Yes we have it out now 😂 But thank you for the information we didn't knew that. But dismantling the boiler down in the engine room would have left a mess and I'm not too sure if the front gasket of the boiler does look suspicious or not. It's from 1987 so better safe than sorry.

Amazing work guys. Think about flushing the engine cooling pipes. Maybe even use a descaler to wash out any rush a lime build up.

Great job, Barbara and Daniel! I love watching your videos. I still think you probably don’t need to overhaul your engine (piston rings, journal bearings, and such) if it runs well and (I think you said) has less than 5000 hours on it. It probably just needs thorough maintenance and new hoses and such. That will be expensive and time-consuming enough!

Little spoiler here, you're absolutely correct. Now that we've seen the inside of all pipes there's no need for an overhaul. Now that the engine had its first good maintenance in many years it looks and sounds like a good engine again. But maybe we give the engine a little refresh at the end of this year. Talking the valve covers off, maybe service the fuel injector pump and so on.

Congratulations in getting that heavy monter of a heater out of the engine room. I see you are getting some good use out of the sawzall. If you thing you are going to have a lot of stuck bolts in the future consider getting a small oxyacetylene kit. I took a welding class to help with my skills as I am restoring a classic car. During the class we were also introduced to various cutting methods, including the oxyacetylene torches. To get badly rusty nuts off you get get them red hot and quench and then they may come off. If not, you can cut them easily as well. It’s another tool that requires serious respect. It miss used it can act like a bomb. It is however an amazing tool to get badly rusted but off or cut metal. Small “home use” kits in the US can be had for around $300 not including the gas. Best of luck with your continuing restoration and transformation of you ship.

Hi Barbara & Daniel, excellent video as usual. Just a small comment: I was thought when using a saw-all to always have the "skis" again the piece you are cutting to avoid having the tool "buck" (jump backward) and to avoid the risk of breaking the blade and having it fly toward you or someone close by. OMG watching the part where you lift that heater out of the engine room was scary, I can only imagine in real life. :-0 Haha, I like that you went at it with a pressure washer! And I agree (for what it is worth) at some point you need to clean all this mess, wipe it dry and put a heater in there so it all dry out. You can always spray a light coat of WD-40 or similar lubricant afterward. That must have been SO satisfying. Cheers, a.

Personally I prefer a clean engine room-bay. If you have a leak its much easier to spot and find. Otherwise your looking for a leaks in dirty oil, fuel and coolant. Plus if you paint the metal thats all the protection it needs. great update 2x👍

Oh that hurt watching you power wash with such inadequate equipment, I am a professional power washer I would have set my pressure at about 6,000 psi water temp on hi ( steaming ) ...at those settings it will take paint and rust off. But you use what you have....right? Love following your adventure great job...be blessed 😊

The little pressure washer really was more or less a glorified hose. And even that little thing took the paint straight of at some spots. Hot water, a steam cleaner or a pressure washer with a heating unit would make a huge difference. But the important thing is that we're working on the engine now and the relatively clean engine room makes working on the engine so much nicer. Often the decision is if you use what you have or doing nothing at all.

For your project and on the long vision, I strongly recommend a blowtorch and a decent welder. Plasma cutter might be helpful but I don't know how they cope with rust, grime and dirt...

i am wondering about the overall plan cause till now it feels like rushing from one adventure to another adventure. I would like to see a kind of overview or masterplan what will be next or what are the goals for 2024 and when you think to set sail again ? I guess you have a rough idea about all of that but when the technical issues will be fixed then you will be able to start the whole interior which will be another and maybe even longer part once all bits and pieces should fit better than before. Might be time for a general overview again, the shipyard or dry dock season and what not.

Our main priority this year is to get the structure of the boat fixed and to re-new the safety certificate (CVO). Our overall masterplan is to be sailing in 2-3 years. But short time plans are constantly changing and altering. If you alter one little thing it changes the whole plan. Also our main priority is to make a proper video every other week.

I use also diesel for keeping bare metal surfaces from corroding but you are right, in that periodically you have to clean it all off and start again.

Suggestion for cleaning the engine room - use a Solvent first to dissolve the oils/dirt, pressure wash, followed by the soap cleaner you used, the pressure wash again. I personally use a biodegradable solvent and it really cuts through the grease and dirt. Following it up with the soap will leave it smelling nicer.

The heat exchanger and the oil cooler are the two most vulnerable pieces to corrode as they contain warm (or hot) sea water.

We don't have raw sea water in the boat. We have a keel cooling and a dry exhaust. Maybe we can add a heat exchanger in the future but for now the system works great and is very reliable.

The fire box on that heater comes appart in sections making it much easier to remove. Just remove the tie rod bolts...

I was always told that two hose clamps are necessary on either side of the hose. (I.e. four in total.) This would make it more secure. You might be able to get two on the engine side, but not on the pipe side. I think you might need to modify the pipe run so that you can get two clips on. I'm also concerned about how short the hose is with one side on a vibrating engine and the other part of the ship. I think this contributed to its failure. I would also prefer to see the hose longer in length so it can absorb the vibrations better.

love your channel, 2 points #1 heater is cast iron? bust it up or heat flanges are like a home radiator they are individual pieces and can be unbolted. Am i wrong?

That's the thing we need to find out. The Def 1160 just recently went out of service life at ordinary DAF dealers. That means it gets a little harder to buy gaskets and spare parts. But there are still plenty of suppliers. We need to evaluate the engine if we just keep it alive or how much is needed to get it back into good condition.

That hose broke like that because the distance between the pipes is to short. The hose did not get enough space/distance to take up the movement between the two pipes.

The statement that oil, grease, muck and diesel preserves steel from rusting is an urban myth. The best way to prevent rust is clean and dry surfaces. Like you hve done now. And it is nicer and safer to work there. Final protection with 2-part epoxy paint, of course, but no hurry. From a professional point of view, that lifting arrangemet is not according to the book. I do things like that in private only :-)

From the cleaning power I agree with you but at the moment we can't fully drain the bilge. That means some of the cleaning liquid will remain there for weeks or months.

We always had bunnies and we just love those little fellas. But Flying Bunny would sound too cute, you never say rabbit on a boat so we were left with Flying Coney. Since it is older English it's a name that would suit a tea clipper ship. The "Flying" is from our sail racing past were we sailed a flying (foiling) catamaran.

Do not ever rely on cheap ratchet straps. Please, get yourself a pair of certfied slings. They will serve you safely for the rest of your marine life.

I would like to hear more about it. The ratchet straps we used are certified and the heater wasn't that heavy. We distributed the load to multiple straps and had redundancy. In the future we will probably use ropes and block and tackle. But what could we've done better?
