Haha! That is always one of our concerns too, lol! We did find ourselves in one spot where we thought we were gonna have a problem, but after a couple tries we were able to get ourselves out! I'd be lying though if I said I wasn't a little scared!

There are a couple 300 and 200 roads that look fine at the beginning and are fine at the end, but the middle sections you can get in over your head and you only have the option of powering through and then going back out or backing back out the way you came in.
@HEKNBAK7 ай бұрын
Yes! That's why we are a little hesitant to pull our camper down some of them until we have scoped them out first. It's an off-road trailer with great ground clearance, but if you watched our Spaas Creek Trail video, that only goes so far, lol! We have found some beautiful dispersed campsites at the end of many of them.

My OnX Offroad Guide to knowing the number system.. The two noteworthy main roads of LBL are the Woodland Trace Scenic Byway FS 100 going 43 miles north to south, and the Canton Road / US-68 going 9.5 miles east to west (counting the bridges) through the center. If you are looking for nothing but an offroad outing, Turkey Bay OHV Area is your place, featuring hundreds of trails of natural rock, dirt, and mud over a 2,200-acre plot of land. On the main LBL Peninsula, a few decoding practices via the number system can be used to find directions or a trail of your desired level in the area. 100 and 200 number routes will be your easiest routes; these can be primaries or upper secondaries (most are paved or gravel, rarely natural). 100 roads are in the northern Kentucky section, and 200 roads are in the southern Tennessee section. 300 roads are generally natural terrain, and the rare 400 roads are more of the same natural terrain; unlike 100 and 200s, these are not state-specific. Another general rule of numbers within all routes of LBL is the lower the number the more north (like 112 in north Kentucky, 206 in north Tennessee, or 302 in north LBL), and the higher the number the further south (like 171 in south Kentucky, or 230 in south Tennessee, or 384 in south LBL). 400 roads are the exception, being randomly placed.

@@YourFriendStChris thanks for sharing that! We covered most of that in the video but didn't know that OnX had descriptions of whole areas like this. We use it for navigation but have never seen this. We got our info from the MVUM. We need to explore OnX features more! That's a great summary.

Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make this. When you say a high clearence vehicle is needed, how high of a lift would you recommend?
@HEKNBAK Жыл бұрын
We just have a 2 inch leveling kit on ours, and that was fine. There were a couple places though that we decided not to go down just to be safe since we were solo. There are many roads that could be done in any vehicle, especially a truck or SUV that already has a little more ground clearance. Some of the more remote roads get very muddy after a lot of rain so might want a little more if you want to do those. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Are any of the roads gated?
@HEKNBAK3 ай бұрын
Occasionally we will come across a gate, but that really hasn't been an issue out here. Usually when we see a gate, you can tell that something has happened beyond the gate to cause it to be closed. In many national forests we have come across roads that are gated to prevent vehicle traffic even though the road is still passable, but we haven't seen much of that in LBL.
@DC4L_864 ай бұрын
Lots of roads are blocked off now and all growed up. They don't take care of a lot of it like they did years ago.
@HEKNBAK4 ай бұрын
@@DC4L_86 we are seeing that in a lot of national forests unfortunately. We hear about budget cuts and personnel shortages, which I'm sure is a factor, but who knows what the whole story may be. We know in some places, areas have been closed due to them being damaged or trashed.

Not entirely true.. The Woodson Cemetery Road FS 129 is perfect for a Prius. But something like the Racetrack Hollow FS 131 is not your typical 100 road and is not Prius friendly.
