Medina has been surfing a really shallow shorebreak near his home beach since he was a kid (Pauba). It may not be as dangerous as Teahupoo, but it definetly is one of the most dangerous (if not the most dangerous) wave in Brazil - over 10ft heavy slabes hitting the shallow sand bottom with some of the best barrels in southreen Atlantic. On the other side, John Florence is born and raised at Pipeline, needless to say anything else. Two sides of the same coin if you ask me. I really want to see these two in epic conditions at the most beautiful wave in the world - Teahupoo. Good luck to the other athletes and let's hope for some good forecast.

good analysis, unfortunately for both of them it didnt take into account the guy who was born and raised surfing Teahupo'o

@@Xalexalexale I've been wanting to say it... Robinson outsurfed Medina on that heat... The way he blocked the heat reset + got the best wave (wich Medina was caught off position) was really good, thinking about tatics. He relied in luck, yes, plus the heat sucked with almost no good waves, but Robinson won the tatic game against Medina. Wich was funny too, cause he then went on the finals and losed in a similar (yet different) way as Medina lost to his. Vaast outsurfed Robinson on that final, clearly had the best tube riding and won fair and clear. The heat also sucked, wich is a shame, but that's surfing and it's always been like that. The womens final felt different tho, taking more account into criterial aspects and also personal judge aspects. Personally I think Marks surfed better, yet the scoring was confusing and it led us to think that Webb deserved the win. Marks did catch more barrels in the final, only made a short one but she cleary had better waves... Also the criteria is tubes. I think Marks gonna get hard to beat when she gets her stalling technic right. She's got the guts. Webb was unlucky, but she clearly already have an amazing tube technic.

My local beach break, I hit the bottom at least once every session at longer periods. Hurts like hell. I am always hugging my head to give a bit of protection. Strangely very few surfers are hitting the bottom at Teahupo.

I like the events at the olympics. My first time seeing it. But its hard to understand the rules. Can someone explain please, because nothing detailed is to be found in the internet... I saw yesterday a surfer going under the wave, coming out clean, do a trick here and there, but only scoring about 4 points, while another doing the same but without tricks at the end scored about 7 points. How that? Is the length of the wave important, do tricks count, is there style points to escape the wave not falling or diving into the water at the end? Thanks a lot in advance 🙂 P.S.: To me it seems the superstars (in my opinion: those crazy big wave surfers) are not at the olympics. How comes they are not there? They seem to be the best at your sport, while this small waves at the olympics look rather "easy" in comparison. Confused.

Wave size and length of the ride inside the tube are main factors in scores.
