The fact that Dave's Perry-like vocals on these demos gives the tracks such a "Jane's" vibe demonstrates, for me, why a lot of the New JA stuff isn't nearly as interesting. When Perry does the "straight Rock" thing, it's not nearly as interesting as the flanged/chorused off-balanced warbly/de-tuned thing. The fact that he straight up can't hit the high notes anymore (hey, I get it, we all get older, I can't sing the same way I could when I was 25, let alone 18), combined with the fact that he was (I'll say it) more interesting even he was "on The Train" than when he's sopping drunk (which doesn't seem to help him hit those high notes, or any notes) drives home the fact that the Awesomeness that was Jane's really did die in '91. They still had an interesting energy/edge back during the Flea-powered Relapse Tour, though still not the same as Avery-era, something I appreciate even more when I see their big Corporate-Sponsored daytime snooze-fests on KZbin. Saw them during the "Strays" tour, was so let down that I vowed to just let that body lie in the grave, where it belonged. I do like a couple of their newer tracks ("Twisted Tales", "True Nature", and "Irresistible Force", especially), but now that they've turned into a tired Festival/Arena act, they don't stray from the Nothing's Shocking/Ritual set-list, and I already saw/heard them perform those live back when they were still Freaky/Edgy/Cool, and still Avery-manned, so have no interest watching Perry crow then in lower registers, surrounded by clueless Millennials glued to their phones' screens, no less. I cherish what they were and what they meant to me back then, but can't stand the pain and cringe-worthy discomfort of watching the Dave/Perry ego-fest that they've now become. Thanks for posting these demos, they're awesome. Oh, and for those who know that they've just never been quite "Jane's" without Eric, Science has your back!: www.guitarplayer.com/miscellaneous/1139/science-suggests-bassists-are-among-the-most-important-band-members/52562
