Decorating a Viking Drinking Horn with Etched Bronze Plates

Anyone have interest in bronze casting? Tempted to try and do a tip for the horn, deciding on how I want to go about it.

What an absolutely beautiful drinking horn! I love your channel as it has inspired me to make some designs for the clan I'm part of. And I have to brag: We did our drinking horn similar to the one you make in this video but with one of my patterns and with the rim made of silver. I've done mostly sand casting with aluminum and Brass. If you want really clean details though you are better off with lost wax.

@@DarkHorseWorkshop Lost wax if you want high quality on whatever detailing you're going to put on it. Also use MUCH smaller rivets, with much smaller heads, and preferably from the same alloy you use for the plates and other fitments. Attention to detail is what makes LARP quality eBay stuff differ from artisinal museum quality pieces. And with your artistic skill (albeit you cheap out and etch and do stuff that I'd expect from a Chinese eBayer) I really believe that you could make museum quality replicas and the like. The only falling down you have is lack of attention to detail. I get you're rushing it because you do it for a living and you're paid per piece, but there's lots of stylistic choices you make as it's faster and easier that all added up hugely impact the work. With your drawing skills you should focus on getting your hand in engraving, which translates readily to lost wax casting too. You're wasting that amazing talent by cheaping out on other parts of the build. I've seen a lot of your stuff based on historic examples. And you'll always say "This is my take on it." Have you ever considered not doing your take and focusing on making it as accurate as possible? Because therein lies the difference between products that are worth hundreds to products that are worth thousands.

@@dr.lexwinter8604 I make almost nothing for sale for the public, because I don't want to. This was for a friend, no charge, all my other builds just sit on a shelf for the most part. When I feel I have time to deep dive into something more purely historical and not go broke doing it, I may do that. Outside of KZbin I build props and costumes for film where it just needs to look good. So though I appreciate where you're coming from, it is tough to jump into new skills. As things get bigger it gives me a chance to try new things, like etching. Thanks for watching.

One way I have found to peen the lower rivets (instead of peening deep inside the horn) is to use a domed nail and push it through from the inside out. Then, I peen the head of the rivet on the outside, with something to support the head of the rivet on the inside of the horn. I use the horn of an anvil, or a long sturdy piece of metal like black iron pipe secured in a vice.

Horn hole is hard to say. If it's for myself I might epoxy and paint it, or maybe wood glue and paint it? As long as the inside is coated with your bees wax or good grade epoxy it should be fine.. Not sure about tin though ..

That horn looks so sweet! Did you have to do anything to make the rivets leak proof? I think I would have sealed the holes with wax.

Wax or a food grade epoxy (I'm going to do a food grade epoxy) I'll do a short video on it really soon. But honestly It takes a ton to fill that horn and when you drink it may be passing over 1 rivet.

Going to food grade epoxy the inside but really you're only drinking over 1 rivet and it holds a TON, so it's fairly fine without.

Why didn't you insert the rivet from the inside then peen the outside using an anvil horn against the inside rivet heads?

Because I visualy like all my rivet heads to be nice perfect round domes. Could certainly flip it around if you wanted to go that route.

What's the point in a drinking horn if every element of it is modern? Why not buy a plastic one on eBay from China. Also drinking horns are more akin to a yard glass, there would be one in a hall for dares. They weren't routine. There's very little in the way of primary source material on the topic, although the drinking horn is where drinking from skulls came from. Specifically lost in translation was the wording 'they drink from skull branches'. Meaning horns. Somewhere someone just thought it meant skulls. And suddenly skulls became drinking cups in popular mythology.
