Decorative File work for the knife maker

This is just a few basic designs I know so its more for the beginner or a person thats looking to up the value or artistic design of a project.

if you want to sharpen a file you put it in white vinegar after cleaning, am unsure about the vinegar to water ratio Also most files cut in 1 direction, if you want files to last longer you should push hard but pull lightly preferably without dragging it on the thing you're working on, some files cut in both directions. And lastly Try putting chalk on your files before working, if what i think is correct it should stop the file from being clogged with shavings and dirt, i didn't test this yet but i heard it from someone that used to work with a german craftsman that believed in taking care of tools so that they last a lifetime, the german craftsman taught him. Hmmm, probably should've tested it before suggesting it to people 😅

Watched a video by fireball tool called "I Filed Backwards 2500 Times, And This Happened" he basically disproved the filing backwards myth. Also, vinegar might clean it and make it cut better but since it is an acid it will actually break down the cutting teeth making them not as sharp.

@@HickLif3 I think the vinegar method would work as it's not eating only at the tip of the teeth but attacking the metal from all directions but you must dilute the vinegar to not damage the file, also was this guys using a file that cuts in 1 direction or one that cuts both ways?

When I studied machining, I was taught to chalk my file to reduce clogging.

Vinegar is only 5% acid and it will work to sharpen the files but you can use any acid

Gave up.the safety sandals for bare feet. Vise not bolted or even clamped down. And NEVER use a tanged file without a handle.

vice was clamped...MY bare feet were perfectly fine aaaaaaaaand using a tanged file without a handle is fine...do it in a safe way if you cant...golf ball it.

Dude!! I like it!! I’ve seen other videos but I like the fact that you take the time to explain the different movements and angles!! Thank You for your patience!! Ya know I gotta tell ya , years ago I was bare foot in my sons room, I had fabricated a simple workout bench with a lat bar attachment for him and I left a burr on the edge and he mentioned it so I got up and before I put my shoes on , it was Saturday, I figured I’d fix the bench and remove the burr !!! So I turned my angle grinder on ,and was gonna take the burr off ,,, before I knew it the grinder was out of my hand and dropping rapidly!! I had accidentally bumped the rail and dropped the grinder ,, long story short,, I ended up in the emergency room getting stitches for a severe wound !! The doctor said, you better be thankful you didn’t cut a tendon or you’d be in a very expensive surgery and may loose the use of a toe or multiple toes!! I learned the importance of wearing shoes! Just a word To the wise !!! Thanks again!!!

First off im not a millennial so FU for that one. As for the rest lol its in my basement my "clean" shop so sanding space leatherwork and watching tv sooooo its a ppe free zone its like you telling me i need to wear shoes in my house or safety boots in my kitchen because there is knives there... oh and FU for the millennial thing again hope you enjoyed the vid though no hard feelings i love these comments broski it keeps me safe and on the long and narrow but was definitely not warented for this vid. 🤜🏼🤛🏼 @Fireworxs2012

Can you do that design on thinner blade steel? The knife steel I am using is 2.5mm, or does it work much better on thicker steel? Great video's by the way, really keen to get into this, Cheers..

Yes you can BUT its going to take waaaaaay more finesse and patience...waaaaay more hahaha but the end result would be amazing if you pull it off

@@CGSmithing I just like my feet being comfy. So, leather apron if I'm smithing in shorts. Otherwise canvas pants, cotton shirt, safety glasses, gloves, and flip flops. My "shop" is my back porch for the moment. So I'm outside when I'm grinding. I'll wear a respirator if there's no wind and I'm grinding.
