For people with spinal cord injuries, an overactive bladder can result in urinary incontinence and other problems. Bladder chemodenervation, sometimes referred to as “bladder Botox®" has been shown to be an effective treatment. In this forum, Claire Yang, MD, urologist with Harborview Medical Center and VA Puget Sound Health Care System, provides some background on this procedure. She explains the mechanism by which it works, who might be a good candidate for the treatment, what to expect when getting the procedure done, how long the injection lasts, and research on bladder chemodenervation.
