The idea that a person dedicates himself to serve Hashem and be supported by benefactors is already present in the Brit Hachadasha, even though Chazal doesn't mention it. Rabbi Bar Enash (as he called Himself) stipulated that if one wants to become His disciple, he has to deny himself, take up his cross and follow Him. This selfdenial is instrumental to Hashem caring for that disciple. In the early church this was supported in the Dedicae, which said that a person could for three days be supported by the local community. After that he had to make himself usefull for that community or move on to the next town. The Rambam made use of support of his brother, but later had to support himself. We see a similar attitude in the early church and many Jewish communities throughout the ages. Regretfully, we have lost most of the framework set up in the Torah to support the teaching of Torah and service in the Temple. Many have abused the community to have themselves being supported by the community. Obviously this is not sanctioned. But Rambam and Brit Hachadasha are similar in this essence, which is only good. Hashem inspires many people to be available to Hashem and be a teacher, an example and an encouragement for the community. One can recognize a true servant of Hashem by three signs: Love, willingness to serve the community and miracles. The miracles originate from Hashem and occur both in Jewish circles and non Jewish circles. It is also up to Hashem to sustain those whom He has called to serve the community. I have seen this support, I have seen the miracles and this system which Rambam refers to, works in practice. If a good and faithful talmid is true to his calling, Hashem will support him. But there also are many who are manipulative, coercing and give Hashem a bad name. Hashem has His own reasons to call on talmidim to serve Him. No institution can correct Hashem on this. This is the doing of Hashem. Baruch Hashem hakoreh letalmidav leshartoh. It worked in the times of Moshe Rabeinu, it worked in the times of the prophets and it works today. Hashem mekayem et dvaroh.

What was the basis for such a conclusion on the part of Harambam? We see in the Torah that Abraham was not exempt from going to war and so wasn't King David and so weren't many others that were holy and dedicated their lives to Hashem.
