Dedication in Chinatown | Saturday Night Cinema

Jack Nicholson, who played private detective J.J. "Jake" Gittes, delved deeply into the character's background. He based some of his mannerisms and style on 1930s detectives and consulted with private investigators to understand their work better. Nicholson insisted on performing his own stunts and was particularly committed to maintaining authenticity in the role. For instance, he famously wore the bandage on his nose throughout much of the film after his character is slashed in a pivotal scene.
