ABOUT THIS CONCERT
With this exclusive concert from the opening week of our 2017-18 Season, one NEA Jazz Master honors the legacy of another. Featuring timeless standards including “Song for My Father,” “Nica’s Dream,” and “The Jody Grind,” the songbook of Horace Silver remains among the richest and most distinctive in jazz. In this fond remembrance of one of jazz’s greatest composers and a personal hero, 2017 NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater pays tribute to Silver, a 1995 honoree, with personal takes on his classics - material the vocalist and composer memorialized on her 1995 GRAMMY-nominated release Love and Peace: A Tribute to Horace Silver. Bridgewater has had a lengthy connection to the composer and pianist beginning in the early 1970s when her then-husband, trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, began playing in Silver’s working band.
