Deee-Lite is a house and club/dance group known for their 1990 crossover smash "Groove Is In The Heart," dance chart hits “Power Of Love,” “Good Beat,” and their albums ‘World Clique,’ ‘Infinity Within,’ and ‘Dewdrops in the Garden.’
Deee-Lite was formed in 1986 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn by vocalist Lady Miss Kier and multi-instrumentalist Super DJ Dmitry and became popular in the New York club scene as a vibrant and lively dance act known for their unique Holographic Techno Soul, psychedelic light show, and innovative art direction. Jungle DJ Towa Towa officially joined the group in 1989 contributing production on the first album and both songwriting and production on the second. Deee-Lite broke up in 1993 but all three artists continue to deejay to this day.

I think it's called a blend of musical influences (like the music the band members really bonded with)... Then all those musical influences get thrown into the pot as a song is written and arranged and recorded... I refer to that process as "making a tune stew"...😆 This song is a perfect and glorious example of this....blending of decades, 60's, 70's and on and on...

the early 90s era (1989-1992) was basically the highest evolution of 80s electronic pop music. It was bizarre how the sound of Cathy Dennis/Dee-Lite/Black Box/CeCe Peniston suddenly disappeared, and was replaced in 1993 by the much more acoustic & introspective sound that people today generally associate with 90s music. The early 90s are a unique era separate from the rest of that decade.

I was thinking more about this and you are so correct! This “mini-era” also produced Crystal Waters (She’s Homeless) and Snap (Rhythm is a dance)that fit this sound. I have often thought that each decade spills into the next for about two or three years. You could write an entire essay about 80s electronic music being the last great gasp of the 80s before being steamrolled by 90s introspective and acoustic type music in 1993.

I don't think I realized until this very moment how much this band helped to shape me. It's such a beautiful pastiche and homage, and oh my god can we not take a moment to give some love to the amazing (and adorable) Q-Tip??!! Deee-Lite personified everything I loved about music, New York, life. Deee-Lite is love. Plus, how great is it that this song is still banging?

Some pearls are eternal, didn’t it? Groove is in the heart is one example from the 90’s. Unbelievably, they did the opposite of what is usual in electronic and hip hop music: instead of speeding up the lines, they slowed down the bass line. Genius. For you young ins, nobody was dressed like this in the 90s. Their clothes, dance moves, psychedelic motif for the background was all early 1970s (late 1960s) The video was meant to be retro so this really stood out in 1990. The music is not typically 90s either but was thoroughly modern. This group was way ahead of their time and totally unique. The album World Clique is fantastic too from beginning to end.

I actually DID dress like this in the mid 80s to 90. This whole style was thrift store cheap and retro before retro went mall. I also worked in a salon so my hair was often in some form of B-52s glory with the fake eyelashes. Oh, and the real go-go boots! I lived and played in a pretty cool City back then. Wow. Great times! I was so blessed to have been in my 20s in the 80s. We paid the price for it, but damn it was fun at the time.

Mine was San Francisco, my favorite City, where the Women are Strong, and the men are Pretty. (And Gay). It was a thing for my bestie, me, and our social group. It wasn’t meant to wound, but to cause non-injuring laughter. So, no offense. I had many, many adventures back during my time in the sun. You’re right, I sure am paying for it now! Oy!! @@traekas7228 My City was Minneapolis! Back in the 80s that place had the best music scene on the planet at the time and I was right in the middle of it! You could tell history was being made in the present. I was even in a club with a handful of other people one slow cold night when Prince was ushered in and did a blues set. What an incredible time! We were blessed weren't we? I cannot imagine what life must be for these young people that never knew the World before 9/11 and helicopter parents watching thier every move. Of course these kids have no idea how bad the AIDS epidemic was either, among many others I lost my best friend in 2001, but wow, when the party was swinging... Groove Was In The Heart!

@Beyonder Definitely. Chicago and Minneapolis were also very tight music communities with one another regarding early 80s and onward post punk bands. Minneapolis bands were frequently playing Chicago and vice versa and each community was supporting the other as well as being friends. Chicago gave us the brilliant Big Black- Steve Albinis band, that was one of the blueprints for Nirvana, and Mpls band Husker Du are obviously one of the Foo Fighters big influences as well. Urge Overkill, Naked Raygun- these bands were familar faces in the Twin Cities, and The Replacements, Rifle Sport, Man Sized Action, Breaking Circus ( with singer Steve Bjorkland from Chicago ) played in Chicago quite a bit. And of course Chicago gave everyone Ministry- whose first EP Cold Life was much more dance techno than heavy industrial. Wax Trax Records was really big too and any quick trip to Chicago wasn't complete without a trip to Wax Trax and perhaps a Cubs game if it was summer. The Cubby Bear Lounge was right there too. These were the early to mid 80s- without Mpls and Chicago there would've never been a so-called Seattle scene, which was a straight rip off of both- right down to the clothes, the long underwear, boots, knit caps and flannel plaid shirts everyone wore because it's so damned cold in both cities during Wintertime. Nirvana even had Steve Albini produce In Utero which was recorded in Minnesota. And lest we forget, Courtney Love was on the scene in Minneapolis too ripping off Kat Bjellands Kinderwhore look among other things before she landed Cobain.

It still cracks me up that they sampled the theme to Green Acres in this song.

I was just 23 when this song came out, it still grooves to this day. I'm stuck in a time warp and I really miss the late 80's and early 90's music. I wish artists would make songs like this again.

@@jimbobbillybob Well it may seem "cheesy" to your music standards; but you had to be there during that era, it was cool.
