How wonderful to see this. I was a fan of Peter way back in the 70’s, and to see him perform with Richard is so heartwarming, comical, and entertaining. Both very talented pianists, and Peters music and songs will live on forever. ❤

Oh how I miss these two. Stilgoe and his wonderful way with words and Skellern who must be one of the most under-rated musicians in the UK. Now Peter has died leaving his wonderful legacy of music, especially all those beautiful settings with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. You'll be sadly missed Peter. Thanks for so many memories.

Thank you, Mr Tabard. This is the tonic that the world needs right now. Both of them were incredibly kind and supportive to me, as I embarked upon doing much the same thing, but not to this level of cool fluency. Skellern's early loss was wretched. And although Stilgoe is too rich these days to have to play the Wycombe Swan, he is using his fortune (without trumpeting his charity) to help those in the world who have been left behind. As the father of the dazzling Joe, at least we can still relish his brilliant DNA.

I found this by the most circuitous route looking for false stars for a joke on my daughter's partner,who has a real tattoo of a star on his bum( I know !!)My wife then found Peter Skellern's wonderful rendition of the Tattooed Lady (still with me?) and I started researching Peter Skellern and found this.And This is wonderfully entertaining.Two consummate professionals in the best English musical tradition.I absolutely loved it.Humorous;gentle;witty;well written and conceived ;a masterclass in how to write and perform.And how I got here is really Hitchcock's Mc Guffin(?) Thank you so much for putting this on KZbin.

I know what you mean about memorising huge chunks of a comedy tape or record; for me it was three of Tom Lehrer (and slightly later in life, Fascinating Aida). But I loved Stilgoe too - I remember his multitracking on Thats Life and other similar.

I did enjoy it indeed! I was looking for a video version of them jump-starting a second-hand car, er, piano ("one lady owner, only used it for Chopin" ... "it's completely flat" ... "your timing's right out" ... "it's filthy in here, give us a rag"), so was so pleased to find a full concert, thinking it must be in it, but no. (It's on Who Plays Wins, but loses a lot without the video - the jump-starting in particular.) But there is much to enjoy in this - thanks for uploading. (As for the date - must be _after_ Pot Black, as they say "used to". Doesn't it say on the VHS case - or is it something you recorded off the telly?) Was Showstopper written by one of the greats, like Gershwin or similar? I think I've heard it by other performers. Not that S&S arent up there with the greats! Like Flanders & Swann, Tom Lehrer, Victoria Wood, Fascinating Aïda ... (If anyone _does_ know where there's a video of the s/h piano sketch, please share the link.)
@highpath47762 жыл бұрын
If you have the CD Show Stopper is Written w/m Richard Stilgoe, 1985 or earlier , published by Noel Gay Music Ltd. Pot Black started on BBC2 in 1968. No Vid of Broken Down piano that I am aware of.
@G6JPG2 жыл бұрын
@@highpath4776 Thanks. Maybe it was this performance I had in mind, or another by these two, that incorporated Show Stopper. Stilgoe is certainly up there with the greats like Cole Porter! As for Pot Black, it's more when it _ended_ we need: another poster was asking what the date of this performance was, and I was just trying to help by observing they said "used to" be the snooker music, so this performance is after that. (Of course snooker is still televised, but uses different music - I think B&W rag [the Winnie version] was always used for Pot Black while it lasted.) The quest for jumpstarting piano continues ... I saw it on TV, so "footage" (quaint term!) must exist in some TV company vault somewhere!
@highpath47762 жыл бұрын
@@G6JPG Pot Black might have continued, but the BBC coverage of the longer tournaments overlapped , the BBC general snooker theme being " Douglas Wood Group 'Drag Racer' ". Douglas had never played snooker but enjoyed the royalties from its use.

Somehow I know the words to the Black Forest Gateaux song. I'm not sure where or when Richard Stilgoe first performed it (Nationwide? That's Life?), but it stuck with me. Memory is a weird thing. But then, he's always been a bit of a light comedy hero to me. Immensely sad to hear of Peter's death.
